THE SCREAMER Reel V PLAYERS A directory of prominent screen people who are known by millions of spectators. ORA CAREW Keystone Studio Los Angeles WILLIAM RUSSELL American Studio, Santa Barbara, Cal. BILLY MASON Fox Studios, Hollywood SCENARIO WRITERS | ] Prominent Film Authors Known | Throughout the Film Industry. | MAVERICK TERRELL formerly scenario editor with Charlie Chaplin and Max Linder, begs to say he has up and gone fishin’ and havin’ a helluvatime, and that he won’t be so damn sassy when his money is gone and he is lookin’ for another real job. Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, or Press Club, Seattle, Washington TOM GIBSON Continuity-Originals Universal City, Cal. KARL R. KOOLIDGE Staff Author Universal CHAS. J. WILSON, JR. Staff Author Universal (Continued from Reel 1) allies in accomplishing the freedom and democracy of the world. Charlie Chaplin is said to have invested a like amount, while Cecil B. deMille raised $150,000 through a personal solicitation of the Famous-Players Lasky studio. Universal, Fox, Ince — all came across nobly. When the list shall haxe been completed and the truth is really known and presented as an open book, the record will be one of which the film folk and their friends as well may be justly and pardonably proud. Whether gauged by total amount subscribed or the number of individual subscriptions, in comparison with the number of persons permanently connected with the industry in its several phases, the deduction will be to the credit of motion pictures as an established and legitimate enterprise. It will show to the world that there is body, permanence, patriotism and real worth to the “business” — for as an established business it has long since come to be known — and will show that in future it is an established permanent enterprise that must be taken into account, whether that account has to do IF WALLIE GOES TO WAR By Scotty McKee They tell me Wallie Reid will soon Be on his way to fight ; If that is true, old Kaiser Bill, You’d better say “Good night.” If Wallie fights as hard in earnest As I’ve seen him fight in fun, The whole damned German army Ought to drop their guns and run. Remember in The Clansman, whenWith neither knife nor gun, He started on eight husky coons And walloped every one. Yes; that was in a picture; ‘ It was just a picture fight, But I’ll bet that Wallie in real life Could do it every night. There’s Jane "nd Kate in Kokomo And Susie in Sioux Falls, And several hundred maids who dream While stitching overalls, Will be sending socks to Wallie, Their hero big and brave, And praying God to spare him From a soldier’s muddy grave. If Wallie dies a soldier’s death And is buried ’neath the snow, We’ll know he died as a soldier should, With his face toward the foe. And some comrade will work hard all night, So that passers-by may scan The knife-cut words on a wooden cross That say “Here lies a MAN.” LISTEN TO THIS! Myrtle Gonzalez went on a party with her fambly Sunday and the weather was so hot after they got to the mountains that they went a wadin in th creek. She fell in too! Ha, ha! Hand the world a laff.! Lookit for the fog horns. A1 Holubar has gone to Santa Cruz islands to shoot “Sirens of the Sea.” They must be naughty mermaids? Max Asher has slipt from Foxlot to Laemmlot. Max always did come home. with progress, development, legislation, education, morality or any of the other solid and substantial institutions of the land of the free and the home of the brave. But local loyalty is not all. While the SCREAMER is proud of the record made by the members of the film family in the great and growing west in its purchase of Liberty Bonds, it is proud also to find that nationally the makers of films — and by that we mean the actors and people employed at studios in all capacities — have invested over two and one-balf million dollars in Liberty Bonds, in an effort to assist the land of their choice in winning the greatest war that was ever forced upon any country on this or any other earth at any time. Nor is that all. The National Association of the Motion Picture Industry is developing plans to continue to co-operate with the federal government in any and every way possible throughout the period of the war. To this end a committee to be known as the War Co-operation committee has been appointed for the purpose of giving attention to any matter in which the motion picture may he utilized to further the interests of the government and aid in winning the war. “"“"'Ill Illlllllllllll 1IIIIIIIIIIIIIII 1 1 IIIIIIII1 1 II YOUR CLOTHES MUST BE SNAPPY! | Therefore seek the tailor who can make them in the latest styles and of the best | | fabrics. Betty Brice has entirely cured Jay Morley of the drug habit, and so “Loyalty” is off the lot. Of course Jack Pratt selected the hottest day in forty years to put on the big cafe scene for “Loyalty.” Then he wore white duck and everybody else had to swelter in “soup and fish.” We wish to announce that the food in the cafe scene was real food, but the drinks were only grape juice. Uncle Jack Lippman says he knows why it’s been so hot. His Satanic Majesty has been heating up the ovens for the Germans. Lee Lawson and Ben Lev are going around looking gloomy these days. Why? Because they’re working on those new comedies. Yes, May Dahlberg is with us and she’s going to be a studio feature. We can see that right now. Bernie is having a ripping time in dear old New York, so a postal says. Windy City Note : — Rex Weber, the wellknown director, is making a series of comedies for the Follies of the Week, featuring wellknown stars. His first picture, with Ernest Truex of the “Very Good Eddie” company in the lead entitled, “The Garden of Allie,” is pronounced a scream by those who have seen it. The second production is “The Hawaiidiot” and features Charley Grapewin, and comedy it holds its own with the first production. In making the Grapewin picture, Director Weber established a new record, that is, he made the picture complete in four and one-half hours, using the Rothacker Studio.
