THE year 1950 was a troubled twelve months in Hollywood, as it most certainly was in the rest of the world. A spirit of unrest prevailed, decisions were made and unmade; one of the greatest scandals of all time clouded the shining name Hollywood has been trying to make for itself, and when Hollywood lost Alan Hale, it was forced to give up one of the most talented of its citizens and a man who would have been an ornament to any profession he had chosen. Gloria Swanson caused grandmothers everywhere to lift their heads, buy new gowns, and regard the future as challenging, when she made her dazzling comeback in "Sunset Boulevard." In addition to being a successful year for seasoned players, 1950 introduced a number of vivid newcomers, among them Howard Keel, Sally Forrest, Keefe Brasselle, Piper Laurie, Tony Curtis, Peggy Dow, Debra Paget, Jeff Chandler, Gene Nelson, Dick Long, and Mitzi Gaynor. And of course there were babies, as follows: Hollywood lost one of its most talented citizens — Alan Hale. Fletcher Markle hugs Oscar winning bride, Mercedes McCambridge. Joan Caulfield and Frame Ross were united in quiet ceremony.
