June 3, 1939 6 T H A N N 1 V I-: R S A R Y ISSUE Page 53 Action Is Keynote of Monogram THE aftermath of the most enthusiastic convention in the history of Monogram reveals that the company is headed for its biggest year. ResiiUing from pledges given by the sales, production and executive forces to eclipse all past records, the new Monogram enters its third >'ear with banners flying high. As usual Afonogram will rely on action. Heading the player roster is Jackie Cooper, who will star in one picture for Monogram next year. Cooper, as a result of "Gangster's Boy," "Streets of New York" and his other screen appearances, is a top rank marquee name and has a loyal following of fans. Continuing as star of the James Lee Wong Chinese detective mysteries is Boris Karloff who will be starred in four Mr. Wong melodramas in '39-'40. John Trent, Frankie Darro, Jean Parker, Fay Wray, Marcia Mae Jones, Jackie Moran, Movita, John Carroll, and Martin Spellman, the new juvenile discovery, are among the personalities who will flicker in Monogram productions during the coming year, in addition to various other name players, who will be cast in important pictures as often as possible. In the western field, Monogram continues with Tex Ritter, singing western star, and Jack Randall, action cowboy star, corralling their share of the outdoor epic addicts. In addition, the company will release eight reissues starring John Wayne, who scored in "Stagecoach." Scott R. Dunlap Plans are to release fifty-four pictures, of which twenty-four will be western films. The thirty feature productions are divided into three classifications — six W. Ray Johnston anniversary specials, twelve box office attractions, and twelve showman's success series. The Jackie Cooper production heads the list of six Johnston specials, and among the other extra-budget pictures in this group are "Rip Van Winkle," based on the famous tale by Washington Irving, which will feature an established star and the world's most famous midgets ; "His Father's Son," the American Magasine story, read by more than 10,000,000; "Queen of the Yukon," Jack London's roaring action drama of the Northland ; "Son of the Navy," by Grover Jones and True Boardman, Jr., which was enacted over the Silver Theatre of the air with Ginger Rogers in the starring role ; and "Under Northern Lights," a drama featuring the immortal melodies of Charles Wakefield Cadnian. Monogram will also present four Wong mysteries, starring Boris Karloff; four "Tailspin Tommy" pictures based on the famous comic strip which appears in over two hundred and fifty newspapers, starring John Trent; four Frankie Darro action dramas, with the popular young star ; and four pictures of today's American youth with Marcia Mae Jones and Jackie Moran co-starred. The company considers its outlook bright because its manpower, east and west, is considered among the shrewdest in the industry. The home office triumvirate of W. Ray Johnston, Edward Golden and George W. Weeks, represents seasoned executive veterans, familiar with exhibitor problems. On the west coast is Scott R. Dunlap, a producer who has always been identified with showmanship in Sweetheart Team Movita and John Carroll, in a scene from "Wolf Call", current Monogram, release. They will appear together again in several pictures for release in the new season. motion picture production, and he is surrounded by live wire associates including E. B. Derr, Paul Malvern, William Lackey, Edward Finney and Frank Mel ford. ROY DEL RUTH NOW DIRECTING THE STAR MAKER * PARAMOUNT * COURTESY 20th CENTURYFOX
