The cast includes Eddii; "Roc.hestkr" Anderson, Andy Devine and Virginia Dale. Shooting is schedu'led to start this week. Starting date of MGAI's "The Shop Around the Corner", has been set for November 1, with Ernst Lubitsch directing. Tiie picture will star Margaret Sullav.an and James Stewart with Joseph Schildkraut set for a featured role. Director Michael Curtiz and a crew left Hollywood to tour several western states seeking locations for "Virginia City," Technicolor special starring Errol Flynn. In addition to Flynn, the cast will include Brenda Marshall, Alan Hale, Donald Crisp and Fr\nk McHuch. Frank Tuttle has been assigned the producer-director berth on Universal's "Charley McCarthy, Detective", scheduled to go before the cameras this week. Edcar Bergen, and his boy-friends, Charley jMcCARTHV and Mortimer Snf.rd. will be starred. Preparations have been started at the Goldwyn studio for Gary ("ooper's next starring vehicle "The Outlaw," which will be directed by William Wyler. Production will start within the next three weeks. "The Light of Western Stars", which Harry Sherman will place in production next week with Victor Jory in one of the top roles, will be released as a special picture on .Sherman's program. Lesley Selander will direct the Zane Grey story and also the next "Hopalong Cassidx " picture starring William Boyd. Republic has signed Charles Bickford for one of the top supporting roles in "Wagons Westward," starring John Wayne. Sol Siegfl will ~prbdnee from tlie screenplay by Joseph Moncure March. The production will carry a budget of around §400,00(1. "Grapes Of Wrath", one of 20th CenturyFox' big budgeted pictures, went before the cameras last week under the direction of John Ford. The cast, headed by Henry Fonda, includes Dorris Bowdon, John Carrahixe, Iani: Dakwell and John Qualen. "Mexican Spitfire," with Lupe Velez and Leon Errol in major roles, has gone into production at RKO under the direction of Leslie Goodwins. The supporting cast includes Donald Woods. Linda Hayes, Elizabeth RisDON and Ward Bond. Cliff Reid is producing the new feature. William A. Ullman, Jr. has been assigned to write the screenplay of "Gold Star Mothers" for Producers Pictures. Starting date of Hal Roach's "1,000,000 B.C." has been advanced to November 6 with D. W. (tRIFFITH producing. Roach will personally direct the picture. The studio sent an u'ntitled Laurel and Hardy picture into work this week with (:ioRDON Douglas directing. Betty Compson, Wynne Gibson and Peggy Shannon, three popular players for many >-ears, have been added to the cast of Columbia's "The Street of Missing Women". Sidney Salkow is directing witli Ann Dvorak and Preston Foster in tlie top roles. ' David 0. Selznick has set a six-picture production schedule for 1940, starting with "The Swan," starring Incrid Bergman, on February 1. Second on the list will be "Titanic," to be followed by "If Winter Comes" and "Flashing Stream." "Titani<" will co-star Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier. "Sv,'iss Family Robinson", Gene Towne and Graham B.aker's first production for RKO release, went into production last week under the direction of Edward Ludwig. The cast includes Thomas Mitchell, Edna Best, Freddie Barthelemew, Terry Kilburn, Tim Idoi.T and Christian Rub. Doris Day, favorite with New York theatregoers for the past five years, makes her screen debut in Roy Rogers' latest film for Republic, "Saga of Death Valley." It is now in production imder the direction of Joe Kane, who also fills tile producer berth. '^'iiung As You Feel" has been selected as the title of the sixteenth in the 20th Century-Fox Jones Family series. Production is scheduled to begin November 1 with Director Malcolm St. Clair at the helm. Donlevy to Play "McCinty" Brian Donlevy's first assignment under his new Paramount contract will be the title role in "Down Went McGinty", scheduled to go before the cameras late this fall with Preston Sturges directing his own stor>-. Donlevy has just finished important roles in "Destrj' Rides Again" and "Alleghany Frontier". Green to Direct "Shooting High" Alfred E. Green, who has just completed "20,000 Men A Year", will direct the Jane Withers-Gene Autry co-starring film "Shooting High", set to go into production at the 20th Century-Fox studio on November 15. Lou Breslow and Owen Francis are writing the screenpla}-. New Songs for Tony Martin Bob Wright and Chet Forrest, song-writing team responsible for a succession of nationaly popular tunes, are composing six new songs for Columbia's "Passport to Happiness", starring Tony Martin. Andre Kostelanetz and his orchestra will be featured in a group of musical numbers. The picture will be directed by Joseph Santley under the production wing of Irving Starr. "South of the Border" Gene Autry's next production for Republic will be "South of the Border", titled after the popular British song success of the same name. Autry sang the song on his worldwide broadcast from London several weeks ago and thousands of fan letters reciuested the use of the song in a picture. Autry just completed "Washington Cowbo^'". Warner Bros, to Make "Klondike" With a cast headed by Wayne jNIorris, Humphrey Bogart, Lya Lys and Dennis Morgan, Warner Bros, have scheduled "Klondike", story of the gold rush of the '90's, for production late this year. The picture will be made on a pretentious scale similar to "Dodge Cit^•" and "Virginia City".
