WANDERING
AROUND HOLLYWOOD
with the "QlcUune>i"
Our idea of box office "meat" will be the combination of Jack Benny and Carole Lombard, under the direction of Ernst Lubitsch. And the story, a comedy about a vaudeville troupe stranded in Poland at the time of the German invasion, sounds very, very funny . . . even the title, "To Be Or Not To Be."
Paramount's famous "road" workers, Director Victor Schertzinger, Producer Paul Jones, and Stars Bing Crosby and Bob Hope, the quartette responsible for "Road to Zanzibar" and "Road to Singapore," and getting ready to spring "Road to Morocco" on the waiting public. We bet they'll love it as much as the others.
If, and when, Gypsy Rose Lee's "G-String Murders" is brought to the screen, we wonder how the art-work on the ads will be handled ... or are we thinking a little too fast.
The whole town's talking about the box office success of Samuel Goldwyn's "The Little Foxes," the picture most critics predicted was for the "high-brow" trade. As usual, STR hit the nail on the head in its review which said — "One of the season's most powerful screen offerings."
While on the subject of powerful screen offerings, our snooping reporter tells us Sam Wood's "Kings Row" is the greatest picture Warner Bros, has ever made . . . and this is backed up by the ravings of Hal Wallis.
Gabbing with Tom Keene, Monogram's cowboy star, about his new series of outdoor action films. We discovered that in addition to being a swell actor, Tom has plenty on the ball when it comes to "gray-matter." Let's get together again, cowboy.
Santell on Own
Al Santell, who directed "Aloma of the South Seas" and "Malaya" for Paramount, has announced that he will free-lance in the future. Santell has several deals pending, one of which he will announce shortly.
"Road Agent" Rolls
Universal's "Road Agent," with a cast headed by Leo Carillo, Andy Devine, Dick Foran, Anne Gwynne and Anne Nagel, got the "go" signal from Director Charles Lamont a few days ago.
Ellison Tops "DA" Cast
James Ellison goes back to Republic for the
top role in "Mr. District Attorney and the
Carter Case," with Marjorie Weaver in the feminine lead.
Another Elliott-Ritter Opus
"Devil's Trail," newest Columbia western costarring Bill Elliott and Tex Ritter, went before the cameras under the direction of Lambert Hillyer.
