taining nonsense that will keep most audiences chuckling and laughing aloud during most of the proceedings. More than ever before, Kyser proves he can do something besides wave a stick, for his reservoir of talents is liberally drawn upon, while Barrymore, whose fans have multiplied like rabbits since his appearances on the Rudy Vallee program, will get high honors, inasmuch as his assignment here is in keeping with
the type of comedy that's registering so well for the Great Profile. Virginia Simms is lovely, whether singing or speaking her lines, and she is fast developing a thespian talent that will serve her well in future screen roles. In view of the strong popularity of both Kyser and Barrymore, "Playmates" should keep box office cashiers busy wherever it plays. Tieups with music shops on the songs and band recordings, tieups with the sponsors of the Kyser and Rudy Vallee programs (if possible) form only the beginning of the possible exploitation activities.
Catchline: "Get ready to hold your sides when Kyser and Barrymore get together in this racy, riotous musical comedy."
A "Girl and Her Dog" contest, offering prizes for the best photos of a girl and her dog, was a highlight of the "Lady Be Good" campaign put over by H. J. Arnold, Indiana Theatre, Terre Haute, Ind.
Poorman Designs Shadow Boxes, Uses Stunt That Stops Traffic
Charles Poorman, circuit road-manager for Rubinsky Theatres in Schuylkill Haven and other Pennsylvania cities, has designed new photo and one-sheet boxes for lobby and exterior use. When photos are on view concealed lights behind them bring out the color ; when posters are displayed, the lights spread over the poster. The displays are topped with colored panels which are illuminated indirectly.
For "The Bride Came C.O.D.," Poorman placed a large shipping case in front of theatres playing the picture. The title was lettered on the sides. Within the case was a boy whose protruding legs were covered by silk stockings, while high-heel shoes adorned his feet. A spotlight was focused on the wildly waving legs, and a voice from inside was heard to say "Let me out!" at frequent intervals. The stunt stopped traffic, Poorman reports.
