BRyant 9-7532 New Theatre Construction Proof that the ban on building materials imposed by the Government last month is really having an effect on the industry is seen in the paucity of new theatres announced on this page. STR's Bulletin Board for several years the most accurate guide to new theatre construction reports only ten projects were started or announced in October. In the same month last year there were 16 new buildings announced. However, so far, the OPM order has apparently not affected renovations which can be partly accomplished in some cases without using materials essential to national defense. For the first time in the history of STR's Bulletin Board, renovations and openings outnumber announcements of new theatre construction. Renovations, Openings Rogers, Ark. — Marvin Carroll and Associates have commenced construction work on a third theatre here. Salamanca, N. Y. — Construction started last month on a 1,200 seat theatre and store building for the Schine Circuit. The contract, estimated at $125,000 or more, has been awarded to the Benz Engineering Co. Trumansburg, N. Y. — Cornell Theatres of Ithaca and Elmira have begun construction work on a new theatre. Upon completion, the house will be known as the Cayuga. Rochelle, 111. — Alger Theatres, present owners of the Hub Theatre under the management of William Kassul, have announced that a second theatre will be built in the town. Gulfport, Miss. — The American Legion and Ed Ortte of Bay St. Louis, are jointly constructing a new theatre here to be known as the Legion. It will be the fourth theatre in town. Lisbon, O. — George A. Manos, circuit owner, has announced plans for the construction of a $65,000 theatre on Highway 344 between Leetonia and Columbiana. The house will seat 750 persons and will have parking room for 500 cars. New Boston, Ohio — C. A. Metro, operator of the Strand Theatre and manager of the Garden, both in Portsmouth, has purchased a lot in this town where he will erect a new theatre with 600 seats. Washington, Ga. — Mrs. Willingham Wood, who operates the Strand Theatre, has contracted for the construction of a new theatre which she hopes to have operating by Feb. 1. Bridgeport, Conn. — A permit has been granted to Joseph Frouge and Sons to construct a $142,000 theatre building on upper Main Street. Plans were prepared by Toby Vece and the contract for the construction work has been awarded to the E. and F. Construction Co. Los Angeles — Acquisition of 14 lots has launched a $200,000 theatre building project on San Fernando Road. Charles P. Skouras, executive head of Fox West Coast Theatres, has announced that the ground breaking ceremonies will be held in the near future. Architect S. Charles Lee is completing plans. Marietta, Ohio— A $25,000 rehabilitation is under way in the Hippodrome Theatre. Practically nothing will stand but the four walls. Ray C. Hickman, vice president and manager of the Washington Theatre Co., is overseeing the job. Wilkes Barre, Penna. — Plains Township's new theatre opened last month under the management of Joseph Engel. The $60,000 house contains the latest in art work and design, both inside and out. Crown Point, Ind. — The new Rex Theatre opened here last month, having been under construction for four and a half months. The house seats 353. Owensboro, Ky. — Following a deal under which Lee Mofhtt and M. A. Lightman pooled their interests here, the Bleich Theatre was closed for extensive remodelling. Salisbury, Md. — The Wicomico Theatre is completing extensive remodelling of both interior and exterior. Charles Clark is the manager. Gloucester, Va. — The Edge Hill Theatre has been reopened after complete renovations. Difficulties in obtaining materials necessitated opening of the theatre before all the remodelling could be completed, however. Philadelphia — Contract for alterations to the Benson Theatre, 64th St. and Woodland Ave., has been awarded to Louis Sheffit. David Supowitz prepared the plans. Anderson, Ind. — Complete reconstruction of the Starland Theatre along modern lines was to have been started this week. The house will be renamed the Times and will be jointly operated by Anderson Theatrical Enterprises, present operators of the Riviera Theatre and the Alliance Theatre Corp., operators of the State Theatre. Anchorage, Alaska — Work on the new Lathrop Theatre is moving according to schedule. The last of the season's pouring of concrete on the exposed portion of the foundation has been completed. The main floor slab is done and pouring of the basement slab can be done under cover. During (Continued on Page 37)
