Plot: Benny Goodman finds a trombone player in a tenement house in the district where he grew up. He gives him a job with his band, but the boy turns so cocky, that he ends up by forming a band of his own and taking all of Goodman's men with him. Their success is very short-lived, so they all return to Goodman, happy to admit tiiat there is only one Goodman. It takes a little longer for the trombone player to give in, but he does it eventually. CALL OF THE SOUTH SEAS (Rep.) Drama. Principals: Janet Martin, Allan Lane, Roy Barcroft, William Henry, Adele Mara. Director, Jack English. Plot: A fugitive from American justice makes himself head of a small French-owned Pacific island. There beneath a veneer of good will, he and his henchmen victimize the natives. A new arrival, who fled the U. S. as an embezzler gets a job with this man. Then an F.B.I, man arrives and it eventually turns out that the embezzler and he are working together to trap the fugitive. MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS (Tech.) (MGM) Drama. Principals: Judy Garland, Margaret O'Brien, Joan Carroll, Gloria de Haven, Mary Astor, Tom Drake, Leon Ames. Director, Vincente Minnelli. Plot: This is about a likable, middle-class American family living in St. Louis. There are five children with their pranks and their love affairs — the father and mother with their ambitions for the future of their children — a grandfather with a sense of humor and a maid who is part of all the goings-on. ALLERGIC TO LOVE (Univ.). Principals: Noah Beery, Jr., Martha O'Driscoll, David Bruce, Franklin Pangborn, Maxie Rosenbloom. Director, Edward Lilley. Plot: The ultra smart wedding of a society couple is brought to an abrupt end when the boy and girl elope. Their honeymoon is upset when the wife develops an unexplained allergy which causes them to separate. As long as they are apart, she's okay. Things look pretty bad for them, until the bride accidentally finds the cause of the trouble. When this is cleared up, the happy couple sail for home together. THE KEYS OF THE KINGDOM 20thFox) Drama. It portrays the struggles and hardships a young priest doing missionary work in China endured. On his return to Scotland, his superiors wanted him to retire from missionary service, but after reading his memoirs permitted him to continue his work in his own wav.
