60 SHOWMEN'S TRADE REVIEW June 24, 1944 I have read many articles pro and con regarding the checking service that is considered a nuisance by so many exhibitors. Naturally I realize I am "sticking my neck out," but I for one am in favor of exchanges checking any and all percentage pictures they wish. However, I am just as rabid against their checking a flat rental picture, as I feel it is none of their business what we gross at the theatre if we are lucky enough to buy the picture in question at flat rental. I speak for Martin Theatres only — a circuit of 77 theatres located in 49 small cities and towns scattered over Georgia, Alabama, Florida and Tennessee — and will not attempt to speak for other exhibitors. We welcome checkers ; in fact, our managers have been trained to put out the welconje mat for them, assist them in any way possible ; show them that the ticket numbers offered them on today's box-office report are the same numbers that we closed with the night before. Our cashiers are instructed to assist the checkers in their hourly reports, and our managers have special instructions never to allow the checker's report to deviate in any manner from his report that he sends through to this office, and if there must be a difference the manager must send me an explanation at once. We invite the checker to make himself at home, give him a cushion chair in the lobby if he wishes to be seated there. If he happens to be energetic enough to have our business at heart, we sometimes allow him to be in full charge of the door, take tickets, etc., during emergencies. We take this position : The exchange is our partner any time we show a percentage picture and an honest person does not resent proving to his silent partners that he is handling their money according to rules. Any exhibitor circuit official will demand a reduction or refund on a picture that does not warrant the terms asked when this picture was sold, therefore, why shouldn't the exchange be allowed to investigate, not only today's business, but look into the effort made to advertise this picture to the theatre's patrons? I can't see why there is so much dissension about anti-checking. It is permissible on our circuit for the exchanges to send a blind checker to check the checker if they so wish. We want our theatres operated in a manner that any number of checkers would turn in a decent and collaborating report on every Martin Theatre. Hugh G. Martin Martin Theatres, Columbus, Ga. Brown, Carney Get Leads Wally Brown and Alan Carney have been assigned the leads in RKO Radio's "Zombie on Broadway," the story of two night club press agents. To Collaborate on Screenplay Clifford Odets and Harold Clurman will collaborate on the screenplay of RKO Radio's "Deadline at Dawn," which Clurman will direct under the producership of Adrian Scott and the supervision of Sid Rogell.
