1944 AWARD WINNERS Bing Crosby Ingrid Bergman Topper of this year's Motion Picture Academy Awards was Bing Crosby's long awaited designation as "best actor of the year." His prize-winning performance in Paramount's "Going My Way" is but one of seven accorded that picture by the Academy. Selected as best picture of the year, "Going My Way" also won accolades for best actor, best supporting actor, best direction, best screenplay, best original motion picture story and best original song. "Going My Way" will be made available for re-issue sometime in the fall, according to Charles M. Reagan, Paramount's vice-president in charge of distribution. Barry Fitzgerald, whose characterization of the lovable old pastor in "Going My Way" won him an Oscar as best supporting actor (and nearly won him the top award as best actor), may be seen in "None But the Lonely Heart" currently, and is cast in Paramount's "Incendiary Blonde" and "Two Years Before the Mast," both scheduled for Fall release. Leo McCarey won two honors. His "best direction" and "best original story" both were for "Going My Way." McCarey directs two other Academy award winners in Crosby and Ingrid Bergman in "Bells of St. Mary's," now in work at RKO. Ingrid Bergman's award as "best actress" was won in MGM's "Gaslight." Currently Miss Bergman may be seen in Paramount's "For Whom the Bell Tolls" and soon will be seen in Selznick-International's "Spellbound." RKO has announced a re-issue of "Intermezzo" in which the prize-winning star appears with the late Leslie Howard. "Saratoga Trunk," under the Warner Bros, aegis, is another Fall release for the versatile Miss Bergman. A Special Award as the outstanding child actress of the year went to Margaret O'Brien, MGM's youngster, who may be seen currently in "Music for Millions/' "Meet Me in St. Louis" and "Canterville Ghost." The youngster also is cast in "For Our Vines Have Tender Grapes," a forthcoming release from MGM. The Thalberg Award for the most consistent and outstanding production achievement of the year went to Darryl F. Zanuck, vice-president and production chief for 20th Century-Fox. Darryl F.
