NOTE: In the Advisory Council Report, issue of June 23, we promised to reproduce for your information a tried and proved formula for theatre maintenance control under the supervision of the house manager. Below is the schedule submitted by Council Member Jules S. Wolfe, supervisor of purchasing and construction, Famous Players Canadian Corp., Ltd., which his department devised for this progressive circuit. It has worked well during the war years according to reports and we believe it worth preserving and using.

This Manual has been compiled for the purpose of serving as a guide in maintaining and conserving your theatre property and equipment, in order that you may continue to operate throughout these crucial times. Every item listed should be given constant attention. This guide should be framed and posted for convenient reference. YOUR EQUIPMENT CANNOT BE REPLACED TO REMAIN OPEN YOU MUST CONSERVE, SAVE, GUARD AND MAINTAIN

DAILY
Check box office equipment.
Check ticket choppers and empty.
All ticket containers must be securely locked with
key.
Check all vending machines for stock, operation and condition.
Check flashlights, bulbs, batteries.
Check advertising display and notice signs for
attractiveness, neatness and appeal.
Inspect and check lamps and neon tubing on sign and marquee Remove snow after heavy snowfall. Check exit lights, aisle and step lights, emergency lighting, batteries, buzzer system, and all electrical fixtures.
NOTE. A new lamp chart, showing wattage, voltage and location of lamps, should be made and located at switch box.
Keep spare lamps under lock and key.
All stairways, exit passages and exit areas must be
kept clear, clean and well lighted.
ROUTINE
Remove all gum, lipstick, finger marks and all foreign matter from floors, walls, ceilings and woodwork.
Clean and deodorize all plumbing fixtures, including w.c.'s, urinals, basins and drinking fountains. Clean all glass, Vitrolite, stainless steel, metal, etc., on both exterior and interior of theatre. Empty and clean all waste receptacles. Refill soap, paper and towel boxes. NOTE. Use portable lamps for cleaning — not house lighting system.

Inspect seats for cuts, tears, loose'hat wires, security, etc. Remove gum.
Inspect all furniture, drapes, curtain and carpets for cuts, tears, gum, dirt, etc. Check all exit door panic bolts, hardware, etc., for easy opening.
(3) Clean all floors, stairs, ramps, pit, areas, etc., in entire theatre. Vacuum all carpets.
Clean and mop all terrazzo, marble, linoleum, etc.
Boiler room must be cleared of ashes and rubbish. Check safety valves, water gauge glass, sump pump, check valve, etc.
A constant supply of fresh air must be maintained in the boiler room. Punch boiler tubes.
(61 Check personal cleanliness and appearance of staff contacting patrons.
WEEKLY ROUTINE
Inspect all roofs, flashings, copings, ventilators,
skylights, etc, for leaks.
Clean out all gutters and hoppers.
Remove snow and ice from areas on roof where
overloading is considered a ha: ard.
(2) Check fire extinguishers, fusible links, alarm boxes, hose lines, nozzles, control valves, hose couplings, etc
(5) Vacuum all drapes, curtains, upholstered furniture and fabric panels, etc.
Clean and scrub all floors, including projection rooms, stage, stage apron, dressing rooms, toilets, auditorium floor, etc. Check and clean radiators.
Check space between roof and ceiling, disposing of all debris etc.
(3) Check, clean, lubricate all pumps, motors, ticket vending machines, locks, hinges, door closers, curtain control equipment, and all the mechanical equipment requiring this attention.
(4) Check all floor and stair coverings, including carpets and rubber rriats, linoleum, etc., against hazards. Tighten all handrails.
MONTHLY
n) Clean crystal chandeliers and all other lighting fixtures, ceiling fixtures and dome chandeliers must be lowered and cleaned.
Inspect winches and cables on ceiling fixtures for safety.
Vacuum all wall panel tapestries. Vacuum all stage draperies, valances, teasers, curtains, etc.
Inspect stage rigging, tie lines, hangings, horns, magnascope screen apparatus, counterweights, electrical equipment, props and scenery. Dust screen.
Check skylight and asbestos curtain. Test sprinkler system.
NOTE. Front and rear switchboard panels must be kept clean and free from all foreign materials. Avoid overheating switches due to overload. "No Smoking" signs must be displayed and respected.
(6) Check air conditioning equipment.
Clean fans, oil and clean motor and equipment. Clean filters.
Check exhaust fume fans.
Check shutter release system and fusible links in projection room.
NOTE: Keep only minimum quantify of paints, stains, varnishes and other highly inflammable materials on hand.
ROUTINE
Check marquee roof and clean out hoppers, troughs etc.
Do not overload marquee with heavy display material.
(3) Check boiler breeching and chimney for soot accumulation.
(4) Inspect fire escapes. Have rust and corrosion removed and ironwork painted periodically. Check roof, flashing and ventilator, and paint where corroded.
Check brickwork and coping, and point up where necessary.
Check organ loft and equipment, including pipes, blowers, motors, etc.
(2) Check marque and sign anchorage cables,, guy wires and turnbuckles.
<51 Check adjacent stores and properties for cleanliness, attractiveness and general upkeep.
PLEASE BE MINDFUL of the fact that the Maintenance Department is charged with the responsibility of periodically inspecting your theatre, and must of necessity report conditions as they are found.
