Description:
Established in 1933 by Charles 'Chick' Lewis, who previously edited the 'Manager's Round Table' section in Quigley's MOTION PICTURE HERALD. Lewis originally called his new publication SHOWMEN'S ROUND TABLE, but after a lawsuit from Quigley, he changed the title to SHOWMEN'S TRADE REVIEW (STR). Over the next two decades, STR proved to be a formidable competitor to Quigley's HERALD and steadily grew in circulation. It's easy to see why exhibitors wanted to subscribe. STR's editorial voice, reviews of features and shorts, 'Box Office Slant' tips for how to promote movies, and concise and well organized 'Booking Guides' made it a trustworthy and highly useful magazine for exhibitors. -- Eric Hoyt, 2014

'Lonely Hearts' to Brown "Lonely Hearts Club," based on an original story by Lee Loeb and Arthur Strawn, has been assigned to Associate Producer Don H. Brown at Republic. John K. Butler is writing the screenplay for the comedy romantic-musical, the plot of which centers around a matrimonial club. DeMille Buys 'Unconquered' Cecil B. DeMille has purchased Neil Swanson's new novel, "Unconquered," in long outline form as his next picture for Paramount release. The production will be in Technicolor on a spectacular scale, and will be made largely in Virginia and Pennsylvania where the actions described actually took place. RKO Editing 'Hotel Reserve' "Hotel Reserve," spy story produced and directed in England, is in course of editing by RKO Radio which will release it. Cast is headed by James Mason, Lucie Manheim, Raymond Lovell and others. A^ictor Hanbury, Lance Comfort, and Max Greene produced and directed. To Collaborate on Script Jesse L. Lasky Productions has signed Lewis Foster to collaborate with Jane Allen, author of "Thanks, God, Fll Take It From Here," on the final screenplay of the novel. The RKO picture will be directed by Mervyn LeRoy, with shooting now slated for early September.
