Laughton replaces Michael Chekov, who had to withdraw because of illness. The assignment marks the first time Laughton has portrayed a Nazi on the screen. Laughton had been previously scheduled to appear in the play "Galileo," production of which will be postponed to enable him to start immediately on the "Arch" set. King Bros. Buy 'Rip' Paul Jarrico's script of "Rip Van Winkle" has been purchased from Monogram by the King Bros., who will produce the screen version of the famous story in color at a budget of $1,250,000. Extensive tests for the actor to portray the title role are now under way, with production scheduled to start before the end of the year for Monogram release. To Use Ecktrachrome One of the first companies to utilize Ecktrachrome, new Eastman color process for still pictures, will be the Hakim-Litvak organization. During production of "Time to Kill" a large number of test portraits will be made of co-stars Barbara Bel Geddes and Henry Fonda. With some 1,500 film workers early this week voting to observe picket lines of the striking Conference of Studio Unions in defiance of their non-striking parent union, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employes, the Hollywood strike situation was again aggravated, with the possibility that processing of film may be seriously impeded, if not altogether halted. Last week — when the following report was being vvritten — no solution had been found for the two-week-old strike. After concentrating at Warners, MGM and Republic, the pickets changed their attack to Columbia and Technicolor. While a solution was being discussed at the AFL convention in Chicago, the CSU determinedly maintained its picketing against the majors, with the independents still untouched. The CSU declares it will not halt the strike until the "clarification" of the AFL directive has been put into effect and a contract signed with the producers. While no one can challenge the fact that production has been affected, the studios nevertheless have managed to complete some films and start others. Columbia Still Going Despite receiving the brunt of the picketing during most of the week, and being the scene of dramatic struggle between club-wielding police and bloodied pickets, Columbia kept rolling. "Lady from Shanghai" wasn't affected in that it was shooting at Acapuico, Mexico, where location will be maintained for a month. Glenn Anders left a sick bed to accompany Rita Hayworth, Orson Welles and the rest of the troupe on their southward flight. "Law of the Canyon," fourth "Durango Kid" effort starring Charles Starrett and Smiley Burnette, started this week at Iverson's Ranch, with Nancy Saunders in the femme lead. Lillian Wells, ex-Broadway showgirl, was given her first dramatic stint by being awarded a supporting chore in the Richard Dix-Karen Morley drama, "The Hunter Is a Fugitive." Columbia picked up William Bloom's option as associate producer; his next is "Millie's Daughter," which was set to roll late this week. RKO Starts Western RKO finally got that western going. Originally tagged "To the Last Man," it is now "Thunder Mountain." Cast includes Tim Holt, Richard Martin, Martha Hyer and Robert Clarke. Herman Schlom produces and Lew Landers directs. Alerted for trouble several times, RKO still — at this date — is conspicuous by its absence of pickets. Moroni Olscn was added to the Hakim-Litvak Production, "A Time to Kill," which was scheduled to leave for location this week. Howard Hughes made a loan of a big trans port plane to "The Bachelor and the BobbySoxer," marking the first time one of the huge ships has been "signed" for a role. The plane will be used for four days of shooting at Long Beach airport. Frank Capra was scheduled to shoot one day, October IS, on "It's a Wonderful Life," adding a "heaven" scene. Players being used are James Stewart, Donna Reed, Beulah Bondi, Henry Travers and Todd Karns. A pair of lion cubs was flown from Montreal to Hollywood for Sol Lesser's "Tarzan and the Huntress"; the cubs' mother accompanied them. The company has been on location 40 miles out of town. All's Well at Monogram Monogram, being outside the pale of the 10 majors, has gone on its merry way during the strike. Roy Del Ruth has taken his "It Happened on Fifth Avenue" company to a ranch for exteriors, marking the fourth location for the picture. Del Ruth, who produces and directs, hopes to finish the sophisticated comedy this weekend. Producer Sam Katzman, who just finished one for Columbia, returns to his old "alma mater," Monogram, for a Teen-Age film. The picture, "Teen-Agers Go West," is being directed by Arthur Dreifuss. Jerry Wald's band will appear, as well as the Spade Cooley western outfit. Enterprise Active Enterprise is going to town, despite trouble it had earlier in the CSU controversy. Two films are being shot. One is "Arch of Triumph," which has been going for some time ; and the second is "The Other Love," which just began. Latter is a David Lewis production from Erich Maria Remarque's unpublished novel, starring Barbara Stanwyck, David Niven and Bob Stack. Supporting players to date include Joan Lorring and Maria Palmer. The budget is set for $2,000,000 and a three-month shooting schedule. UA Units Working Jules Levey continues to make progress with his "New Orleans" on the Roach lot, although that studio has been picketed. Woody Herman and his band finished their stint, but ended in a blaze of jazz glory. The scene ran six minutes without a break, shifting from a concert rendition of a number to a swing version. Dorothy Patrick began by singing with 60-piece symphony orchestra, then came Herman with his band, 26 choral singers, three piano soloists and an organist! Arturo de Cordova shares lead honors with Miss Patrick, on loan from MGM. "Vendetta," Preston Sturges' period piece about feuding, is on location for three weeks, (Continued on Page 37)
