Description:
Established in 1933 by Charles 'Chick' Lewis, who previously edited the 'Manager's Round Table' section in Quigley's MOTION PICTURE HERALD. Lewis originally called his new publication SHOWMEN'S ROUND TABLE, but after a lawsuit from Quigley, he changed the title to SHOWMEN'S TRADE REVIEW (STR). Over the next two decades, STR proved to be a formidable competitor to Quigley's HERALD and steadily grew in circulation. It's easy to see why exhibitors wanted to subscribe. STR's editorial voice, reviews of features and shorts, 'Box Office Slant' tips for how to promote movies, and concise and well organized 'Booking Guides' made it a trustworthy and highly useful magazine for exhibitors. -- Eric Hoyt, 2014

Patronage Family Adult Adult Objectionable# Temptation Mature in Part NATIONAL BOARD OF REVIEW: Founded in 1909 "to represent the interests of the motion picture public," maintains a Review Committee consisting oi some 300 men and women of all ages, "representing a cross-section of public taste." SCHOOLS MOTION PICTURE COMMITTEE. A committee of the National Board of Review which "represents groups of parents and teachers from public and private schools," whose purpose is to select pictures "suitable for age groups 8-12 and 12-14." NATIONAL LEGION OF DECENCY: Committee of the International Federation of Catholic Alumnae reviews pictures and publishes its moral classifications for guidance of members of the Legion — composed of those members of the Catholic Church who join the Legion. Designations: Unobjectionable for General Patronage; Unobjectionable for Adults; Objectionable in Part; Condemned. # Objection: Light treatment of marriage; reflects the acceptability of divorce. GENERAL FEDERATION OF WOMEN'S CLUBS. The motion picture committee ia headed by Mrs. Arretus F. Burt, Chairman, of St. Louis. Two reviewing committees are maintained — Mrs. Harry Lilly, New York, Chairman Eastern Committee; Mrs. John Stearns Thayer, Los Angeles. Chairman Western Committee. Designations: Family — 8 years and up; Mature Family — 14 years and up; Junior and Senior High School Students and Adults; Senior High School Students and Adults. ** — Exceptional.
