(Continued on Page E-46) Sturdy Chair-Covering Fabric Serves Mm Hall 14 Years Gus Eyssell, managing director of Radio City Music Hall, confirms that some of the Goodall Fabrics mohair plush chair covering material installed fourteen years ago is still in use in that immaculately maintained auditorium. Chairs that have had the heaviest use have needed re-upholstering in fourteen years to keep their appearance up to Music Hall standards, Eysell explains, but in other areas of a theatre that has put out the SRO sign on countless occasions the original material still serves. The current line of Goodall theatre upholstery material embodies marked improvements in durability over that installed in the Music Hall so long ago, according to C. J. Dyer of Goodall Fabrics. The original, "Moravia" quality, has been replaced by one now known as "Molano" quality, which is even more durable because it is more tightly woven. Dyer asserts. Explaining how the mohair plush chair material was first developed, Dyer declared in an interview with an STR representative: "With the advent of sound pictures, the acoustic properties of the theatre became of major importance. Feeling that we, as manufacturers of theatre seating upholstery, might contribute our bit toward the solution of this problem, we had all types of upholstery materials used on theatre seating tested for their sound absorption qualities by an independent laboratory equipped for this purpose. "These tests showed that a mohair plush had the highest absorption quality of any fabric submitted for testing. This information, as well as the general ratings of other types of upholstery material, was made available to the industry. "The ideal theatre seating upholsterjmaterial should also be luxurious in appearance, and of exceptional durability Having these three factors in mind, we manufactured our Moravia quality, now much improved and known as Molano quality, as being the ideal theatre seating upholstery material, luxurious in appearance, of great durability, and having the highest sound absorption qualities. "It is interesting to note that the soundabsorbing properties of this material are practically the same as that of the human body, giving, therefore, an even absorption, whether the theatre is partly or completely filled. "Many theatres, while preferring materials such as noted above on the backs of their chairs, for various reasons prefer a cushion leather-like in appearance and properties. Ordinary simulated leathers used for this purpose were unsatisfactory due to a tendency to crack and peel. Our answer to this problem was our Redo quality, which resisted cracking and peeling so satisfactorily that the trade still asks for it, although we are today making a much improved article, known as Redolite, the coating of which is compounded of a modern vinylite plastic. "Both of these items can be easily cleaned with bubble cleaner, or with suds made of pure soap and lukewarm water. Both represent, we believe, excelleni examples of a product 'blended for performance'." (#22). Immaculately maintained. New York's Radio City Music Hall is still using sturdy plush mohair chair fabric installed 14 years ago.
