Lillian Behm, Universal switchboard operator, and Assistant Cashier Dolores Smith were both on the sick list. Gale Reyka, secretary to Lou Ratener and Tony Stern of Ohio Theatre Service, is convalescing from an operation. Ray Schmertz, 20th-Fox city salesman and son of the local 20th-Fox branch manager, I. J. Schmertz, finally had his illness diagnosed as Rocky Mountain spotted fever. He is now on the mend. Anne Vickers, secretary to MGM Manager Jack Sogg, is vacationing in Florida, the guest of Marie Hentges, formerly of the local MGM exchange. KANSAS CITY Exit of Frank Plumlee from the position of district manager for Theatre Enterprises, Inc., the Griffith circuit, was a sort of a repeat performance all the way around. Plumlee left to go into partnership with Tom Edwards in a string of eight theatres operated out of Farmington, Mo., the former George Karsch circuit sometimes called the Lead Belt circuit. There he succeeds Harold Harris, who left TEI here about a year ago to go it on his own with Edwards. Harris recently left the circuit to return to the Griffith circuit, this time in Dallas as right hand man to H. J. Griffith. Plumlee keeps the Colony which he operates at Oak Grove, Mo. Ed Kidwell is the new TEI manager for the Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska houses, coming up from Roswell, N. M., where he was city manager. Doug Burrell, publicity man for the Durwood circuit, is hobbling about with a cast on his foot to hold him down. He broke an ankle at Columbia', Mo., where he had gone to see the MissouriS.M.U. game. The Kimo Theatre, which recently shifted to foreign-language films, went to a double-feature policy last week. Bill Meyer, manager, began the new policy with bookings of "Torment" and "Passionelle" for the first week. New city manager in Leavenworth, Kan., for the Durwood circuit is William C. Riester, who resigned as manager of Buckley Amusement Enterprises' Capitol, Shamokin, Pa., to accept the post. Before going to Shamokin n!ne years ago, Riester was usher, doorman and assistant manager at several Skouras Theatres' houses in New Jersey. He was in the armed services for two and a half years. NEW YORK Members of the Motion Picture Bookers Club and their friends were recuperating Monday after one of the largest, fun-packed annual dinner-dances their organization has known. Held at the Hotel Commodore Sunday night the event, in a balloon-decorated ballroom, included dancing to the music of Barry Bros. Band and entertainment by Larry Storck, Copsey and Ayres, The Fontaines, Frank Ross and Mile. "Voice of Theatre Speakers" JOE HORN STEIN has it! Pierre, Cass Franklin and Monica Moore. Committee in charge included Chairman Lou Wolff and Dan Ponticelle, both of Brandt, and Eddie Richter and Harry Margolis, both of MGM. Cute Chinese Nancy Ny is the latest addition to film row as a typist. Shipper Harry Newman is out with an injured ligament in his left arm. Loew's Vice-President and Treasurer Charles C. Moskowitz has been sworn in by Mayor William O'Dwyer as an honorary deputy police commissioner of New York City. Capt. Messmore Kendall, commander of the New York Commandery, Military Order of the Loyal Legion, presided at the organization's banquet at New York's Waldorf-Astoria last Wednesday. Mrs. Kendall entertained the ladies of the Companions at luncheon at her apartment atop the Capitol Theatre of which Captain Kendall is president. Event was the 63rd annual meeting of the Commandery-in-Chief. Siritzky International's French importation, Marcel Pagnol's "Cesar," starring Raimu and Pierre Fresnay, will follow "Ruy Bias" at the Elysee Theatre. The National Warner Club last week reelected Stuart H. Aarons president.
