Lippert Productions' Sam Decker left for San Francisco to attend company's sales convention. Elaborate premiere inaugural opening was given the Fox West Coast's new 1,200-seat, first-run Crest, in Sacramento. Governor Earl Warren participated in the ceremonies with Fox West Coast President Charles P. Skouras acting as host. Tent 25, Variety Club of Southern California, held its annual election of crew officers last Tuesday night at a special dinner meeting at the Ambassador Hotel. Dr. Stafford L. Warren, dean of the school of medicine at the University of California, was honor guest and speaker. BOSTON Business meeting of the Boston Publicity Club was held Tuesday evening, Oct. 11. Plans for programs for the coming season were then announced. Club will have speakers mainly from city newspap ers' editorial rooms twice monthly. Luncheons will be held each Monday noon. . . . "Live" entertainment is to be installed at the Copley Square according to announcement from its owner John Costello. That pulchritudinous singer Betty Ann Grove now appearing on television in many programs is a Boston girl and had her first encouragement at the local RKO theatres and then with Ruby Newman at the Somerset. . . . Paul Longo operates his Medford Drive-In theatre, Meadow Glen, near Boston, with an invitation preview Friday night. Dead : W. E. J. LOUISVILLE The swan song of vaudeville has been sung at the National, for the present at least. The house has been darkened for remodeling, with no reopening date set and no announcement as to future operating policy. . . . Even though there has been a little deviation from the normal summer weather, no announcement has yet been received regarding the closing of any of the under-skyers for the season. In fact, two new projects in the area contemplate openings within the next couple of weeks. They are the Preston Highway Drive-In on Preston Street Road here and the Twin Theatair Drive-In at Jeffersonville, Ind. . . . There seems to be a notable increase in the number of double feature programs being presented at th drive-ins in the immediate area. Foster Brooks, well known in Louisville radio circles, has reportedly signed a contract with Columbia Pictures and rumors have it he will soon be seen in Gene Autry movies. ... As something a little extra in the way of entertainment for the ladies on hand for the KATO convention, the organization arranged for a ladies' luncheon at the widely known Pendennis Club here. WASHINGTON Milton Berle headed a variety show on Oct. 7, at Uline Arena, for the benefit of Shrine charities. . . . Loew's Capitol Theatre offered a full vaudeville bill of eight acts, starting Oct. 13. Paramount Manager A. C. Benson was sched Life of Riley Riley Day, in honor of the Hoosier poet, James Whitcomb Riley, will be celebrated in 100 or more Indiana theatres during the week of Oct. 7. Gov. Henry Schricker proclaimed the period Riley Week because it marks the 100th anniversary of Riley's birth. uled to attend the three-day Paramount sales meeting in New York, this week. . . . Mrs. Sara Young, 20th Century-Fox booker, entertained her sister, Mrs. Minna Leavitt, of Brooklinc, Mass \t last report, Booker May Feldman was in first place in Screen Guild's playdate drive. . . . New biller at 20th Century-Fox is Helen Alexander. Penny Adams, daughter of MGM Manager Jerry x\dams, was one of a num'ber of children who drank a solution from an old garden spray, found in a neighbor's basement. After a visit to Children's Hospital, all the children are in good condition, but it was a pretty frightening experience for their parents. KANSAS CITY Theatre owners of' the Kansas side cooperated with the Association of Insurance Agents last week in observance of Fire Prevention Week. The association furnished 17 movie shorts which were shown at local theatres during the week. . . . Television comes to Kansas City when WDAF-TV goes on the air regularly beginning Oct. 16. . . . Bob Shelton and Jack Braunagel of the Commonwealth circuit were out last week looking over some of the company's theatres. . . . Gretchen Brown of the Commonwealth office is on vacation. . . . Francis Aleyers of the Civic Theatre, Brookfield, Mo., was seen on the row last week. . . . Lawrence Lehman and his wife are vacationing in southern California, leaving Ted Wynn in charge at the Missouri. . . . Charles Horstman, New York, in charge of projection for RKO theatres, was in town looking over the set-up at the Missouri Theatre. . . . Spike Jones, in town for a one-night concert, took time out to drop in on Manager Jimmy Nixon at the renovated Orjiheum ; Jones' concert for Pla-Mor in the Music Hall was a sell out. PITTSBURGH The Dale Theatre, Johnstown, Pa., one of the two houses in that town operated by L. L. Chamberlain, burned this week. The damage was quite severe and it will be six to eight weeks before the house will reopen. ... A request to lease property opposite the County Airport for a drive-in theatre was rejected this week by the County Commissioners Office. Mrs. Marjorie Skerba, booker for 20th Century-Fox, has resigned effective October 15 to assume home duties. She will join her husband in Albuquerque, N. M., where they were married this Summer. . . . Three communities in Allegheny County will vote on Nov. 8 on the question of legalizing Sunday movies. They are Aspinwall, Pleasant Hills and Harmar Township.
