SHOWMEN'S TRADE REVIEW, October 15,. 1949 Useful Idea for Drive-Ins Drive-in snack shop, developed by Sweden Freezer Mfg. Co., makers of frozen custard machines, in daily operation on Elliott Avenue, Seattle. Three types of service are offered — direct from sales window to car as pictured, by itinerant vendors to adjacent parking area, and at tables inside "Freeze Shoppe." Operation is unconnected with any theatre; it was developed as part of a comprehensive program for testing both freezers and service methods from the point of view of the purchaser of the company's machines. Altec Marks 12th Anniversary With First All-Out Sales Drive For the first time in its history Altec Service Company is staging an all-out sales drive, covering all Altec services and all equipment manufactured by AltecLansing Corporation. The drive started September 12th, the 12th anniversary of the company's existence, and will continue for 12 weeks. Valuable cash prizes will be open to all Altec sales representatives, inspectors, field and business managers, and division chiefs. L. D. Netter, Jr., has been named the drive captain. He is being assisted by "Mo" Morris, Product Sales Manager, and by a committee headed by Altec's Treasurer, Paul Thomas. Altec's newly announced television sets and recently-announced miniature microphone will be featured in the new sales campaign, in addition to Voice of the Theatre speaker systems, amplifiers, lounge music systems, and service and parts contracts. Screen "Floating" in Colored Light Tried Out in France "Floating" screens are giving "excellent" results in three theatres in Bordeaux, France, according to the British publication Ideal Kinema. The screen is surrounded on four sides by a light trough lamped with concealed sources in four colors — yellow, green, red and blue. Colors and intensity can be controlled from the projection room. New In-Car Heater for Drive-Ins A new in-car heater for drive-in theatres is being introduced to exhibitors along the Eastern seaboard by Murry Lafayette, who was formerly with Warner Brothers and 20th Century Fox theatres in tne Albany, New York, area, but is now General Sales Manager for National Heaters, Inc., of Glendale, Calif. Audio Engineers Meet In New York October 27-29 October 27th-29th have been set as the dates, and the Hotel New Yorker in New York as the place, for the Fair and technical sessions planned by the Audio Engineering Society. Magnetic recording and audio testing methods will be the highlights of the session. Standardization, interchangeability and uniformity of magnetic records are to be explored with the help of discussions from the floor. Factors involved in testing sound circuits for frequency, harmonic and modulation distortion will also be canvassed, and the discussion will extend to the measurement of such transients as pulses and square waves. The Fair will display audio-frequency equipment produced by some 35 manufacturers and covering a wide range of magnetic recorders, new loudspeakers, etc. Theatre Sales of Popcorn Featured at NAPM Meeting A special panel devoted to sales of popcorn in motion picture theatres will be one of the highlights of the fifth annual convention of the National Association of Popcorn Manufacturers, scheduled for the Palmer Hotel, Chicago, October 24th-26th. Theatre popping vs. off-theatre popping; direct operation; merchandising ideas, noise factor and greater use of vending machines will be among factors discussed in detail at the theatre sales panel, which is slated for 10 A M. October 25th. According to NAPM's Executive Secretary, Thomas J. Sullivan, there will be at least 60 separate exhibits and 500 registrants at the convention, an increase of 50 per cent over the previous record totals. American Seating Advances Bersie in Promotion Relay Following a policy of filling vacancies from within its organization, American Seating Company has advanced three of its executive employes in a series of relay promotions. Hugh G. Bersie, Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Northwestern U., who has been with the company since 1945, is now Director of Products. Replacing him in his former post of Transportation Product Manager is Kenneth J. Barclay, graduate of the U. S. Naval Academy and a destroyer captain during the war; and he in turn has been replaced by John J. (Jack) Keating, his former assistant, a graduate of Michigan State College and also a Naval officer during the war. Television Attracts Millions At Canadian National Exhibit Displays of television (which has not as yet been sanctioned by the Dominion government) were an outstanding attraction at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto, and drew audiences estimated at a total of 2,300,000 persons. MarconiDumont (a Paramount affiliate), Cossor, Ltd., Canadian General Electric, Northern Electric, RCA-Victor, Westinghouse, Admiral and Philco were among the manufacturers who exhibited their TV equipment.
