The Cole-Spar 3-Flavor Hermetic dispenser may be purchased direct or installed and serviced without charge on a percentage-of-profit sharing arrangement with the theatre. The manufacturing firm which developed and builds the ColeSpar, is headed by Albert Cole, president, and widely regarded as the Dean of the automatic beverage cup dispenser industry. Low Cost Animation Motors Now Available Gale Dorothea Mechanisms now offers light duty, 32 r.p.m. display animation motors at prices ranging from $5.50 to $4.00 each, depending on the quantity ordered. They come equipped with two electrical connections — a 6-foot cord that plugs into any standard outlet, and a 4-foot cord terminating in a light socket that takes any standard bulb. Motors are said to have been built especially for animating displays, to be quiet in operation, and of long useful life. One end of each motor shaft terminates in a crank that can readily be used to convert rotary motion into rocker arm motion for oscillatorytype displays. Alexander Smith Cuts Price And Profits as Costs Go Up A policy of reducing prices in the face of rising costs has cut Alexander Smith & Sons Carpet Company's net profit on common to $1,123,560 for the six months ending June 30, 1949, as compared with $3,736,709 for the corresponding period of 1948. Despite its policy of cutting costs and profits, however, Alexander Smith experienced a reduction in consolidated net sales of 16.1 per cent during the first hiilJf of 1949 as compared with 1948. SMPE's Record Convention A record number of technical papers, requiring morning, afternoon and evening meetings during all five days from October 10th to October 14th, inclusive, was presented at the 66tn Semi-Annual Convention of the Society of Motion Picture Engineers at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood. Among the highlights was a technical talk on television by the inventor of the RCA system. Dr. Vladimir K. Zworykin. Dr. Zworykin spoke at a special meeting held in the Carnegie Assembly Hall of the Mt. Wilson astronomical observatory. Other paper addresses and discussions dealt with motion picture lighting, lenses, film emulsions, color photography, sound recording and related topics. Eastman Kodak Vice President Edward P. Curtis spoke on "Motion Pictures on the International Scene." An estimated 300 motion picture engineers from all over the United States, and six from Europe, attended the gathering. Altman and Tanney Donate Projectors to Israel Ted Altman, nephew to William Fox, donated twenty 35-mm. portable sound projectors to Israel for the instruction and entertainment of Israeli soldiers, STR learns, at the suggestion of J. A. Tanney, President of S.O.S. Cinema Supply Corp., who himself gave five 35-mm. sound projectors. The donations were made through Material for Israel, Inc., of 250 West 57th Street, New York, which had appealed for projectors, record players, amplifiers and any other equipment suitable for entertainment or instruction of troops. Hild Floor Machine Co. Occupies New Building Hild Floor Machine Company, manufacturers of floor maintenance equipment, have moved into a new building of their own at 740 West Washington Boulevard, Chicago 6. It is at the corner of Washington Boulevard and Halsted Street, and includes a giant, two-story glass-walled "show case," an air conditioned demonstration room, and two factory wings. The company is a pioneer in the development of equipment for shampooing carpet on location. Joe Maharam Engaged to Marry Joseph Maharam, President of Maharam Fabric Corporation, will marry Roslyn Silverman of New York City. Maharam Fabric Corporation has pioneered since 1898 in the introduction of soft and beautiful fabrics into theatre decor. Joseph, present head of the company, is a son of its founder, Louis Maharam. Caccavelli to Chicago for Superior Superior Electric Company, manufacturers of dimmers and voltage regulators, have named R. J. Caccavelli to the post of Sales Manager of their Chicago office. He has been with the company for seven years, in the engineering, sales and service departments.
