A terrific wind storm and rain fall greeted the Buffalo Bill Show at the afternoon performance at Harrisburg, Pa., Wednesday, June 24. Although aelarge crowd was present luckily no person was injured. Col. Cody is in fine health and appears five times in the ring at each performance. Charley Thompson and _ Ernest Cooke renewed several old-time friendships here. Karl Grigsby, C. M. Hafey and George Connors were voted three of the most finished troopers that ever lit in the Capital City. Sam Fiedler is credited with the fact that he actwally has to execute his thoughts while thinking of them—instantaneous—as it were. Joe Harper, the clever assistant treasurer, is capable in his position and well liked. It is officially announced there are no debating clubs or libraries with this show as all are too busy counting money. Sam McClure, the sleuth hound is still the terror of the crooks. Should President Taft add that new bureau— Department of Amusements to his cabinet—Pop Semon and Major Burke are slated for swell places. Minnie Thompson, the rider, is well received daily, as is also Cy Compten, Harry Mervin, Archie Marvelle, John Flanders, Tom Burke are still the same good jolly good fellows. Mr. Hall, the courteous press representative with the show, has exploited some clever conceptions for the one only Buffalo Bill Show in this city. WILLIAM M. TAIT. DOLLY VARDEN’S LETTER. Spokane, Wash., June 14, 1908. My Dear “Billy Boy: I certainly got it right and proper at Missoula. The waters were high. Homes with pet dogs and pianos floated into the ocean. 1 got my skirts wet and my linen soiled. Northern Pacific is great! The most of it is now in the Pacific. A fraction of it that didn't reach the ocean is located on front porches of bouses that were well anchored. The Sells-Floto Circus made it to Wallace and turned people away. They cancelled Missoula, Anaconda and Butte, entailing a flat loss of about $20,000. This estimate does not include the money people would have spent going into and getting out of the show. bear Harry Tammen is figuring on a scheme to make it cost more to get out than te get in. He’s a brick. Mr. Bonfils told me he’s a capital prize. From Wallace the show trains jumped over 1,200 miles to take up the regular time at Bozeman, Mont., the longest single jump ever made by a circus to amuse the people. Advertising Car No. 3, Fred McMann, manager, got hung up at Missoula, and in order to get ahead of the show again, covered 2,200 miles, the longest jump ever made by an advance car. This Skinny McMann is always doing Pike's Peak things. He's from To-pek-a. The business at Bogeman was big. At night there was a turn-away. Saturday, June 13, at Livingston, was like Bozeman. If business keeps up Sells-Floto will quit the season away to the good. Today the show is in Billings. Josh Billings never could tell whether he was named after the town or the town after him. ‘‘Pop’’ Sanders will! locate the truth of the proposition. The people here are still talking about the parade and performances A tremendous hit was scored. The parade blocked traffic for an hour. Several bankers missed dinner and blame the Chief of Police. * The elephants were loaned the Northern Pacific Railroad to assist in rebuilding a bridge. I attended a Kermis in Missoula, given by Mrs. W. J. Pettee and Miss Jessie Palmer, sisters, from Marquette, Mich. The elephant, “Waddy."’ took part and waltzed with the young ladies. Over in India ‘‘Waddy"" was doorkeeper at a permanent Kermis, where Hartiman,. the railroad king. Canced himself into a million dollars. He fed ‘‘Waddy"’ currency, and bought another railroad. The elephant drank sundss with the Kermis dancers of Missoula. He likes Sundaes, the whole family of them Billy, the sky-pilot included. The Tacoma Baseball Club and the two trunks got off the train at Missoula that never got out Some people took it for the May Robson Com pany without May Score, 9 to 0. Some May eall this a base hit: it is really a fowl. Mesmer, the Mystic. is the only showman who didn’t miss a date while the waters were clean ing of the pikes, fields and railroads. He came to Missoula by walking the waters. He hypnotized the population that wasn’t in skiffs. In his company are two popular young ladies and they have splendid talent—Miss Linn Hungate, pianiste. who plays senatas that would stall many “conservatories of music, and Miss Alice (ought to be Annie) Rooney. who hails from Butte, and can sing like a nightingale Both are pretty The Martels, bicycle wonders. scored a big hit in Billy Evans’ Tent Show, which is perpetaal motion for Missoula Sam Rowley. the Australian comedian, was caught with his feet asleep. Voted—*‘Sam Rowley is a funny man. sure enough: he goes to sleep at the wrong end and doean’t know how to get out ef town.”’ People in Montana who are afraid of having their pockets picked now put fish-hooks in them or run as bard as they can for Missoula’s Chief of Pojee or Dan Wicker. Dan you know runs the state He togs in dashy brown clothes, straw bat and red tie. You must see him do dus! ness The Indian who was the peacemaker in the war at Pendleton between the Sells-Floto Indians and the Umatillas and who was hit in the head with a rock or piledriver died at Colfax. I will soon be in Denver, my second appearance there this season. Otto Floto will chaperon me. Always Lion, Dolly Varden. P. S. for fowl admirers.--When the telegraph wires and telephone lines were down during the flood the press revealed the Sells-Floto Cireus scheme for transporting messages. The winter quarters at Venice, the general offices at Denver, the show enroute, and each advertising car, has a flock of carrier pigeons. They were kept busy during the freshet. One flock carried $1,000 from the cireus to the billposters held up at Missoula. These birds covered the 107 miles between Missoula and Wallace in 87 minutes. Newspapers writers are still writing about it. Doc Waddell provided them with elegant pictures of the birds in flight. I still ask ‘Is there no way to halter this Waddell?’ P. S. for the Coach Detective Agency at Cleveland.—Dr. J. J. Johnson, their head man, is hot after the bandit that last year robbed. threw off show train, and killed James Malcolm, of Peoria, Ill., near Walla Walla. NOTES FROM RINGLING BROS!’ CIRCUS. Dubuque, Iowa, June 20, 1908. DIED: June 15, at Toledo, Ohio, aged about four years, Darwin, the missing link. of ANGINA PECTORIS. Friends will please omit flowers. Darwin is dead. We do not refer to the man who wrote profound theories about our ancestors, for that is ancient history, but Darwin, the man-ape. one of this season's features with Ringling Brothers’ menagerie. Though brief, Darwin's career was eventful. Nine months ago he roamed the wilds of India, where he was captured last September by Gabriel Klotz, ap explorer, who brought the animal to America on a tramp steamer, landing at New York after a six months’ voyage. April 1, Darwin reached Chicago and was there introduced to civilization at the Coliseum. where the rafters are now ringing with the ratification of Republican pol icy. He took to higher education as the duck taketh to water, and under the tutelage of Charles Smith. superintendent of animals, was acquiring a polish that gave promise of a brilliant future. But, alas, the white demon of tuberculosis had set its seal deep in the breast of the missing link, and at Toledo, last Sunday, the ghost gave flight and the weary spirit of Darwin laid down to rest.He was no ordinary creature. Though a little shy on nese, the rest of his faatures so nearly conformed with those of the human that Darwin became a living verification of the theory advanced by his fllus trious god-father. He was probably an orang. but unlike those animals he showed no aversion to man, rather prefering their society to that of the monkey. He lived in a house with bay windows, chairs, a miniature hot water heater and pictures on the wall. In a chamber at one end lived ‘‘Dres den Pete,’’ his keeper and constant companion, who now walks listlessly about his duties, Bowed in grtef. Darwin's house jis silent; his rocking chair is vacant, and his pelt is on the way to a taxidermist. The Ringling Brothers have lost a priceless member of their traveling family. Guy Baird, the bard of the sawdust. has sorrowfully turned his lyre and sung the following: Darwin, we will miss you ever: You will never be forgot. When you cross the silent river. May yon find a better lot. Business in Toledo was very good. On Sunday the circus ball team defeated the local nine, the score being 3 to 2. Visitors here were the Roberts Family of Acrobats, Billy Clifford nd Cornalla and Eddy. Mrs. Lew Graham and Mrs. Al. Sweet, ended a month's visit with their husbands and! left for New York At Goshen, Ind., on Tuesday, business was again big and the day delightful. South Bend turned out two good crowds on Wednesday and Thurs day. Joliet gave its usual attendance iu very hot and dusty weather Nearly 200 visitors from Chicago saw the show at Joliet. A few of them who dined at the Ringling table were Dr. John son, Judge Chytranss, Mr. La Point and Abe Glee. One of the Belford Family left there for Mt. Clemens with a severely injured knee. Burns, the roper, closed there; also Pearle, boss canvasman of the side show. Murphy and Vidoc joined the concert Yesterday at Rockford. Ill. the show played to the biggest business it ever enjoyed there practically a turn-away in the afternoon J few visitors there were Fred Loomis, of Chi cago; “Pop Corn George’’ Hall and Charlies Royce, who helped put up the first canvas the Ringling Brothers ever owned. Royee hadn't seen the show for 21 years. When he left it in ISST he says the menagerie nsisted of four elephants and a stuffed lion “But.”’ be adds ‘I tell you they gave a mighty goet performance even then, and people liked it."’ There is no doubt about business here in Dubuque today, for the trains began last night to bring crowds into the city Ople Reed, the novelist, is a visitor here ~~ 010.00 Merry-go-Round Tops 52-foot tops; unmade of good, heavy, white duck, trimmed with solid red duck ; roped in the best manner with unoiled manilla ropes.
