My opinion is that the free ad system has become “joke’’ both to manager and performers. Also a great opportunity for rummies, boobs, rank amateurs, ticket scalpers, ete., to gain a little free advertising and to see their name in print. Last spring, being in need of performers, I wrote to four people, having “‘At Liberty”’ ads in the free columns. I received replies to them all, some saying that they were not ‘‘at liberty,’’ but merely wanted to get a bunch of mail. Others sent me billing matter, and wrote that they were not at liberty, but were running their own show, and ¢ that business was big, etc. As I had been depending on getting at least one of the Publishing Co., Ohio: aforesaid parties, I was forced to lay off a week until I could get other people. Last week, being in need of a comedian at once (owing to sickness), I wired a man having a free ad in your columns to join me at once. He wired me (at my expense) that he at once. He failed to join. and I have heard nothing from him since. a few weeks ago. They answered that they bad already secured a 1 noticed that their ‘‘At Liberty’ ad appeared just the same for several weeks after. Performers on my show sent ‘‘At Liberty’’ ads in, and they received innumerable letters and telezrams in reply. No doubt they would have continued sending in an ad occasionally, if I had not informed them that the next time I saw “At Liberty" ads in the free columns of The Billboard from people on my show who were not “at liberty’’ and did not expect to be, I would fix it that they would be. There are few performers who find it necessary to take advantage of the free ad system. But there is always a certain amount of ‘‘would-be’s’’ ever ready for a like opportunity.
