HARRIS Offers “BIG GAME” A Play by Willard Robertson and Kilbourn Gordon If you want to see a movie film run amuck on the speaking stage do not miss ‘Big Game” at the Fulton. Only do not delay unnecessarily, because in all probability it will migrate soon to the store house and from there to the picture studios, the inevitable end of all plays, good and bad, espeaially bad. All that need be done to it now is to pad out the story to make it drag along even slower than it does at present, and a regular fivereeler is ready for showing. “Big Game” is a play of the Canadian woods, and has all the potentialities of that locale, scenic and thematic. It has to do with characters which, if handled with any degree of skill, could not fail but be intensely interesting and attractive. The action takes place in winter, with swirling snow. howling wind and timber wolves in the distant background. All the possibilities are there for a vital, gripping, real man play. are still there undisturbed by ‘Messrs. Robertson and Gordon. Briefly the story runs that into a trapper's cabin somewhere north of Quebec come a man and woman, recently married, from the States. The girl is a product of the woods, who has returned to her home in the hope of building up her husband's health and also because she is sick of the cities and their people. She worships fanatically animal courage and physical strength. \Also comes to the cabin a French-Canadian lady killer, as powerful physically as a timber beast and just as animal. A heavy fall of snow imprisons the inmates of the cabin, and upon the girl John St. John, the woods animal, fastens his desires. Contemptuous of her husband he breaks into her room at night and attacks her. When the husband refuses to kill him at his wife’s request she decides to leave him and go with the Frenchman, because he is the stronger man. It is only when they are ready to set out for Quebee that the husband rises to the occasion and empties an automatic into the body of the man who has tried to trespass on his preserves, Naturally the lady changes ber mind and the curtain drops on a conventional clutch. One merit the piece has, the quality of the acting given by the four leading characters. Pauline Lord, as the woods woman, gives a remarkably fine, clearcut, vital and sincere performance filled with little changes of expression of light and shade that are altogether delightful. Allen Dinehart, as her weak-chested spouse, is very good, and Reginald Barton, as the trapper. White, a coldheaded, vigorous, plainspoken man, is a vast change from the male hero of “Old Lady 31." f@qually fine is George Gaul’s characterization of the boastful, conceited, wild human animal, St. John. His strut, the straight relentlessness of his purpose, his sheer exhilaration in his power to get any woman he wants, the vainglory of his big bedy all are set out in Mr. Gaul’s impersonation with a certainty and finish that is as unusual as it is effective. The snow scene in the last act and the perspective of the big woods in the first clutch of winter at the opening of the play are especially good. It is a pity “Big Game’’ fails to live up to its innate possibilities, the acting it displays and the scenic investiture it has been given.—PATTERSON JAMES.
