ENTER HULL RUNNING
Since the theater, in the nature of things, is dependent constantly upon the human element, and upon a somewhat temperamental human element at that, the annals of the étage are filled with stories of defecting players and sudden substitution. Few, however, have been quite so sudden, and so successfully sudden, as the entrance of Henry Hull into the cast of Margaret Anglin’s production of “‘The Trial of Joan of Arc,’’ at the Shubert Theater two weeks ago.
Strictly speaking, Mr. Hull was already a member of the cast when it suddenly became necessary for him to step into the lengthy role of the Earl of Warwick. Being about to head a stock company in Dayton and being avid for experience, young Hull was rehearsing the distinctly minor role of a jailer. which he had expected to play under an assumed name. (Mr. Hull is Miss Anglin’s brother-in-law, so he felt certain that his secret would be kept.)
It was shortly before 2 o’clock on the day of the opening performance that the actor who was to play Warwick abrupyy left the cast. Some necessary cutting in the first act had left the part less attractive in his eyes, and his reply was to quit the cast. Young Hull was handed the part, a long one, six hours before the curtain was to rise on the first performance.
Instead of urging him to study lines at such a time, Miss Anglin bade him busy himself with the general scheme of things, hopeful that the lines would follow. Warwick, of course, was a ‘heavy’ role, and accordingly a departure for Hull, who generally acts dashing juveniles. (His only “‘heavies,’’ in fact, had been in Miss Angtin’s productions—Oliver in ‘‘As You Like It,"* and the father in * Green Stockings.’’)
Not only was @ strange part thus thrust upon Hull on short notice, but the role required a peculiarly complicated make-up, including a faise nose, which the actor was +a from expert in adjusting. While the costumer fitted him in the dressing room, just before the curtain went up, Hull devoted himself assiduously to the lines—and with such good effect that he bad to be prompted only twice during the evening. It was not until the performance, incidentally, that he played the scene of the prosecution with Miss Anglin. His only rebearsal had been with her understudy.—NEW YORK TIMES,
