CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS AND THE CINEMA begins it is very difficult to say. On the screen, unfortunately, a great distinction is made between love and friendship — love being denned, almost exclusively, in terms of sexual attraction, and friendship in terms of affection. One girl said she 'particularly liked the film My Friend Flicka because it had a different theme from the usual films, which are either about love or war'. The other girl who chose My Friend Flicka (or 'Flicker', as she calls it) made much the same point; she wanted a film about real friendships. Tschernjawski, in his book on the film in Soviet Russia, quotes a boy of about twelve who, writing to the director of the Children's Film Studio, says: T should like to see in the cinema a good, truthful film about friendship . . . friendship is an important matter for all of us, from the time when children start to think seriously about what they are doing; a lot of problems appear then'. Although we are aware that we have treated only some aspects of the effects of films on adolescent audiences, and these very summarily, we have at least dealt with what we regarded as the most important ones. We intend to go more deeply into the problems, which are here only indicated, by interviews and case studies. Above all, however, we are aware that we have dealt only with a very small social group — our main task will be the study of the lower income-group audiences, from children of the 'whitecollar workers' homes to unskilled labourers. NOTES ON INTERVIEWS (i) M. T. — Age, nearly fifteen. Family. Mother, father, grandfather, brother in the Air Force (cadet), training for engineering. Lives in house in suburb, about six rooms. Grandfather used to take children to cinema; mother does not mind her going, rarely go together — parents don't go often. Friends. Greatest friend P. (see 2), always go to the pictures together; does not belong to 'clique' — 'in our form there are groups'. Sees a lot of P. — shares same interests. Interests. Likes art best — she and P. do a lot of drawing together; 'craze' for 'glamour-girls'. Sent some drawings to brother's friend who is 'expert'. Also likes geography very much, history to a lesser extent. Apart from art and geography, does not think teachers think much of her. 90
