CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS AND THE CINEMA Hotel du Nord — remembers very little, not particularly impressed. This Happy Breed — some things more suited to being treated in a realistic fashion. Too many films made after books! Between Two Worlds — very indistinct, doesn't like that. (8) A.K.— Age 14. Family. Only child, lives near P.S., same sort of background. Friends. Special friend (P.S.), and a few more whom she does not know so well. General. Rather 'reflective', 'black and white' opinions; fairly slow, but by no means stupid. Goes to cinema about once a week; less often in the summer (almost all the others go more in the summer, mainly because of black-out in the winter) . Choice of films: you go to a film i if you hear it's on the sort of thing you like'. Likes historical films, and films 'made from books'. Not interested in stars, but mainly in the story. On the whole thinks she has seen more films made after books. Films mentioned: The Song of Bernadette — unusual film; read book after film, would not have read book if she had not first seen the film — this goes for others as well! Was convinced by the story — 'if you actually see a thing on the film, I suppose it convinces you — if you just read a book, you might not have believed it'. Never wants to see Jennifer Jones in anything else. Between Two Worlds — acting very good, it was 'different', 'made a change'; but 'not much story'. Pygmalion — seen twice — 'lovely story, a change from the usual stuff'. Lady Hamilton — 'after I'd seen that, I got a pash on Nelson (meaning Laurence Olivier) for a few weeks afterwards'. Essay. The Song of Bernadette. (9) S.M. Family. Brother, parents. Mother used to dislike her going to the cinema, does not any more. Friends. A few 'special' friends. Interests. Science, but especially modern history 'because it affects me most'. g gy m.s.f.
