CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS AND THE CINEMA
General. Very lively, intelligent. Is producing an end-of-term play, spends much time on it.
Reads Ernest Betts in the Sunday Express \ has not been to the cinema much lately, apparently because of lack of time.
Films mentioned: Don't Take It to Heart — 'it was very different from the American stuff they dish out' ; it was a bit slower and less sophisticated, which she prefers. She liked 'the way the earl wasn't aloof — it rather hits one on the head'; not like one's notions of the aristocracy — thinks it would be better if real life were more like that; thought the older people were better; thinks the aunt was a more representative member of the upper classes.
Pride and Prejudice — seen two weeks ago. Preferred book, as film not very real — 'a bit too fancified', prefers 'realistic' film, but does not like documentaries.
For Whom the Bell Tolls — liked very much, 'it wasn't sloppy' — liked actors. It took a popular theme, civil war, and the treatment was not so hackneyed. The acting was dramatised, but the whole thing was much more likely than 'daring heroism'.
Essay. None Shall Escape.

THE SORT OF FILMS I LIKE I. M.K.
When I go to see a film I really go to be entertained more than for anything else. I don't like to see an unrealistic film, I prefer a good story about something that could really happen.
The best and most realistic film that I have ever seen was This Happy Breed. It was a very good example of the every day life of an ordinary Brittish family. The people in it were not all beautiful with lovely frocks, etc., they were perfectly natural and ordinary. The house they lived in was an ordinary house such as you might find anywhere in England. I liked this film very much because it was so real.
One day we went to see another film called Once Upon a Time. We did not know anything about it and we never would have gone if we had. It was a story about a caterpillar that dances. The story was awfully silly and it just did not seem to make sence. The acting was not very good. I was so bored through that film that for the first time I was glad it finished.
