CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS AND THE CINEMA Charles Boyer whom I saw in Murder in Thornton Square is a good actor, at least he is good in that film because he is rather wicked and not so sloppy. I think sloppy films with a lot of stupid lovemaking in them are horrible. A week ago I saw Rebecca. That was a lovely film. I don't know whether I was not the least bit disappointed because I had expected such a lot after what people had said about it. I don't think films should be boosted up to such an extent that when you go to see a film you expect to see something wonderful. I went to see The White Cliffs of Dover a few weeks ago and I did like that very much. It was just nice. A good story, good acting, and quite realistic. It was rather sad but I didn't mind that. These are some of the sort of films I like and dislike. I like going to the pictures very much and I think that a film with a good senceble story is the best. 2. M.S. When I went to the cinema a few weeks ago, I saw a film which was called The Hound of the Baskervilles. The acting was good, but in every scene in which the people were out of doors, there was a very heavy mist, even at mid-day. I have seen two or three films in which the moors (Dartmoor, etc.) were the background, and in each one, it has been very misty all through the film, and made everything seem unnatural. One film that I liked very much was The Sullivans. In it, were five boys, and one saw them grow from little boys into men. It was very funny to see them as boys, especially when their father saw smoke coming from the shed, and when he opened the door, found them all smoking. Right from the beginning, if one of them was in trouble, the others helped him. Finally, they were all reported 'killed in action'. In some parts it was a bit too sentimental, but otherwise I liked it very much. 3. N.K. A few weeks ago I saw a film called Lady Hamilton. The two main parts were played by Vivien Leigh and Lawrence Olivier. They have always been my two favourite English actors, and I think always will be. The film was based on the life of Lord Nelson (from the age of thirty) . In some parts of the film the scenery and acting was very mediocre, and yet in other parts the acting was magnificent. Other films that I have seen and liked are Rebecca, Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre, Song ofBernadette and a few more. 99
