CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS AND THE CINEMA drone of an American Police Car drive up outside and you heave out a breath of relief. The Walt Disney Cartoons are quite good, but I would never go crazy on them. He is certainly very good but I think it frightens the children dreadfully when he draws those awful witches of his. One of my many favorites was Lesley Howard, I thought it was dreadful the way his life ended. His best film was The First of the Few, where he took the part of Mitchell the designer of the Spitfire. The story is told by the Test Piolet who is first to fly this new plane, which every-body thinks will never fly. Lesley Howard plays his part marvelously. I am not very keen on the films in which there are dozens of well known stars. I cannot think of one on the spur of the moment but I know there have been a few. One of the actresses I cannot stand is Bette Davis, when she gives that smug smile of hers I could do something crazy. I like Don Ameche very much. His acting is very good indeed. A film I enjoyed very much was Yankee Doodle Dandy. James Cagney was very good. In it he tells the story of his life from where he is born to the time he is telling it. He is not just telling the story to thin air, he is supposed to be telling it to F.D.R. This film I also saw twice. James Stuart (who is now in the Army) was a star who I liked very much. I like Will Hay to a certain extent, but after I have had too much of him I think he is very silly. A very good picture I saw was called The Immortal Sergeant. Thomas Mitchell plays the part of sergeant. Another very good picture was The Way Ahead. This is a story about an officer who has been in another company, and expects his men to be as good as his old lot. One day while out on manoeuvres they get very tired and shirk it. After that when they were in Africa at the end of the story the officer always remembers that day and their motto becomes 'remember the manoeuvres'. The officer is played by David Niven who is another of my favorites. He is a fine actor. Some of the films I think are silly, are the films that have no back-ground to them. The sort of films that are based on some silly Love-story. I like a love-story in which there is some sense and a bit of a thrill in it. You can enjoy a film better if the seats are soft and comfy and the atmosphere is not too hot. In some cinemas the atmosphere is so hot one feels quite sick. That is really off the point but I think it makes a difference to the film. 116
