CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS AND THE CINEMA me once. I had been to see a film about a detective. While a man who was a dealer in gold, was sitting with his back to a window in his house, a pair of hands came through the open window, clutched him round the neck, and finally strangled him. The man let out the most awful shriek, which went right through me. That night I dreamt I saw someone sitting in front of the window, and a pair of hands came up behind him. I rushed up and clutched the hands. The man who had tried to strangle the other man chased me all through the woods and goodness knows what, and when he caught me up, and was just about to strangle me, I woke up. You could not imagine how very relieved I was, at that particular moment to wake up. I was very surprised with myself, as I had never had a real nightmare before. As you have gathered from this essay, I like historical and detective films, but not love. 8. M.I. The films I like are very mixed. I like historical films because I think they are interesting (and perhaps because I like history). I like dramatic films (especially if they are gruesome) because they fascinate me. I need not like the story but if I like the acting it is very enjoyable. I was fascinated by the Man in Grey because the acting was good and James Mason was so ugly and menacing, and Margaret Lockwood was so convincing as the villainess. Comedies and Musicals I like if there is not much cuddling and kissing in it. Although I like films I prefer plays because they are more real. (I don't include pantomime as a play.) I think my favourite actress is Margaret Lockwood because she is so realistic. My favourite actor is Monty Wooley because he acts very well. He was very good in Pied Piper, the story of an Englishman who taking two children to the safety of England from occupied France finds children joining on to his two charges and finally takes a German officer's Jewish neice. I think Stewart Granger is good and he generally is leading man to Margaret Lockwood. Patricia Roc is a new actress and as a jealous actress she is very convincing. Deanna Durbin has a good voice but she has had not many good parts lately. King Arthur was a Gentleman and the other film Miss London I thought were nice films being very funny and yet not too funny. Arthur Askey is amusing. Jack Train is a very good impersonator. Max Bacon was very funny with his funny mistakes. 118
