rHE CINEMA ** — ** * * *** * — *** ** CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS AND T] 7. News Reels 8. Serials 9. Gangster Pictures 10. Documentaries 1 1 . Comedies 12. Historical Pictures 13. Musicals 14. Educational Pictures These preference tables appear to show a distinct difference in film taste between boys and girls. The first three preferences of boys are — Cowboy Pictures (6), Detective Pictures (3), Ghost Pictures (3); whereas girls express their first preferences in this order — Love Pictures (7), Ghost Pictures (6), Cartoons (5). The liking of ghost pictures, though less marked in boys, needs perhaps a word of further interpretation. Moreover, it must be noted that, apart from the first preferences, ghost pictures appear with 6 marks in the second list of preferences, and again with 7 in the third list. I suspect that the ghost pictures with our 10 year old girls (and boys) assume the function which the 'fairy tale' had in our youth. The fairy tale is characterised by its lack of reality1 which corresponds to the vivid phantasy life of children up to a certain age limit. It is only fair to say that I am by no means certain of this interpretation. I merely offer it as a suggestion to psychologists for further investigation. Another possibility of getting at the children's film taste is by listing their answers to question 23 of our questionnaire. They are as follows : What Kind of Film would you like to have made?2 1 . A film which has Deana Durbin in it and George Formby that what I would have liked made. (Girl, first preference ghost picture.) 2. The films I want are the news reels. (Girl, first preference, news reels.) 3. Musical films. (Girl, first preference, musicals.) 4. A sad film. (Girl, first preference, detective pictures.) 1 Cf. Karl Buehler, Die Maerchenphantasic des Kindes, in Abriss der geistigen Entwicklung des Kindes, pp. 93 sqq. * I regret to say that our question is somewhat marred by its ambiguity. 136
