THE ADULT AND THE CINEMA fly. I have always had an urge to fly but seeing this film made me positive. I have read in film books that it was going to the films such a lot that made Van Johnson positive that he wanted to be an actor. I noticed that you wanted some details about the writer of the letter. I am 17 years of age, female, born in Britain (Essex) of an Irish Father and American Mother. I work as secretary to the headmaster of one of our local schools. My mother was a clerk and my father an engineer. 4. Mr Re your article in the Picturegoer asking picturegoers two questions regarding our reactions to motion pictures. The first one is, to me, a difficult question to answer. I myself am a film enthusiast and have seen scores of films covering almost every type of entertainment devisable, but never yet have I been moved by a tense or emotional scene, in any shape or form. Although the acting is sometimes of a very high standard, I sit in the comfort of the cinema, knowing well, that the film is, in a way fake, and that the actors aren't actually experiencing or have not experienced, most of the rigourous and dramatic scenes presented on the screen. These in my opinion would demand the services of a superman, but, bear in mind, this is not the case in every picture. For instance, my favourite film is a comedy, not a slap-stick affair as presented by such as the 'Three Stooges', but a film starring comedians such as Bob Hope. These pictures create a good laugh and leave their impression on me for a long while, giving me many a moment silent laughter when reminiscing to myself. But as regards these films having ever influenced me, I define them as a pleasant, non-sensical form of entertainment. (The films mentioned below are the Jon Hall and Maria Montez series) . I will make a confession though, There is one kind of film that leaves me spell-bound and that is those films featureing the tropical ilses, such magnitude of colour and scenery, coupled with splendour on a magnificent scale. When watching these, I seem to forget the present world, in which I am living, lost in a kind of spell that is enchanted by the impression of my being actually there. 185
