THE ADULT AND THE CINEMA Possibly the reason is that in growing up one's features alter slightly or perhaps I made myself believe that by imitating 'Annabella's mouth' my mouth would automatically in time become smaller. That, I think is the only thing that has directly influenced me. There are several catch phrases which I now use, from films. • Two chief ones in my case being i, T am in no position to demur' (?) (meaning to disobey), from Mickey Rooney in a Judge Hardy film, this is sometimes my reply when asked to do something I do not particularly wish to do but know I must. The other 2, 'What watch?' ('Ten watch',) 'Such much?' from the conversation of the old German would be English couple in Casablanca, used frequently when I ask someone the time. I don't think that these however have much to do with the question. Films of great men and women have always impressed me, notably Stanley and Livingstone, The Magic Bullet and others of a similar nature but they haven't influenced me, they have usually left me with a 'good', satisfied feeling of life. So much for Question 1 . Question 2: 'Have films ever appeared in your dreams'. I go to the cinema about 3 or 4 times a month and regularly dream every night, but have never had a dream with anything clear from a film in it. I once dreamt I was stabbed in the throat by a Russian in an Underground passage, which somehow I associate with a film I saw in 1936 or 7 about some prisoners of war digging a tunnel and escaping, but the dream was probably due to too much cheese at supper. I had a very vivid dream some years ago about Deanna Durbin, when she was at the peak of her career. I thought she was wonderful and used to travel 20 or 30 miles to see her films and always read all I could about her. I dreamt I was invited to her house and remember seeing a white wooden fence in front of the house and being introduced to her mother and father and dog 'Tippy'. I forget now what we said in the dream or anything else about it now. At the time it seemed very real and natural and not at all extraordinary. Age: igyrs. Sex: Female. Nationality: British.
