THE ADULT AND THE CINEMA No. 2. Yes Mr Lecturer, do you remember a film called, The Farmer Takes a Wife, with Janet Gaynor and Henry Fonda. Well I dreamt one night of that film, there I was, looking through a wooden fence, than all of a sudden Janet Gaynor is there looking at me, and then I woke up, I can recall another film, Blood and Sand, which co-starred Tyrone Power, and Linda Darnell, I got my chest burned, although it wasn't serious. Well I dreamt one night of Blood and Sand, when the famous Matador Tyrone Power gets gored to death, then all of a sudden I woke up, and soon discovered my chest was sore alright (all right), not from a Bull's horn, but from that burn I had at work. Well Mr Lecturer thats about all I can say. I am 26 years of age, (Male) I am a 3rd Class Cook. I am a Scotsman, Mother is a native of Ireland, My Father is Scottish, My Mother was a nurse before marrying my Father. My Father got killed after the last war, he was a Soldier, he never had the chance to make a proffession (profession). 3 1 . Master . . . In my opinion, the cinema has a great influence on public opinion, and fashion, a great number of films influence the everyday experiences of filmgoers. For instance, a hat, worn by a film star, is copied by the people of my town. This was much more apparent before the war. The hats of Ginger Rogers were seen among crowds on a market day. With regards myself clothes of film stars have had little effect on me. The way a film star buttons his coat may have caught my eye. Perhaps, the greatest influence on my own fashion is the way Gary Cooper or Brian Donlevy brushes his hair. I would say films have a great influence on fashion, and I would say Ginger Rogers has the greatest influence, espicially after Follow the Fleet. If a film is of a serious nature, it may cause you to take important decisions. This depends on whether your mind is pliable. The decision of Michael Redgrave in Thunder Rock, to return to Europe and the world, and to continue the struggle, influenced me to quite a considerable extent. It made me continue in taking an exam which I hoped to take, but I was not sure about the exam before I saw the picture. In another way, the film of J. B. Priestley's book, Let the People Sing, influenced me. This film made me feel it was worth struggling for your ideas. I was about to give up playing my violin, but this film changed my mind. I would say definitely that films influence people in taking important decisions. 218
