THE ADULT AND THE CINEMA Age — 1 8 years. Sex — Female. Nationality — British (Scotch). Profession — Cashier. Profession of Mother — Housewife. Father is dead. 34. Mrs. . . . Your questions — (1) Have films influenced you with regard to personal decisions or behaviour? (2) Have films ever appeared in your dreams? — interest me very much. I consider I am an average type of woman in every way. Age forty (young in ways and looks though!) and am the daughter of a Bank Clerk and a French woman. I am the mother of a little girl of ten, and also have a little war orphan boarded on us by Dr. Barnado's Homes. My husband, ten years older, is a Surveyor and we visit our local picture houses twice a week (paying once and one invitation) I am of a serious type of mind and prefer true films or travel to musicals and 'love' stories. My war work is invoice clerk. The only conscious effect of films I have noticed is that I so admire the smart, well dressed and groomed actresses, that I often try to make my very scant supply of clothes look as well as theirs. Not the ultra fashonable (fashionable), but the sensible, comfortable garb. I have very successfully made several hats by cutting up mine and remodeling (remodelling) them from films. Regarding dreams. Only once have I drempt (dreamt) of a film, or rather film actor, but then I am far to (too) sleepey (sleepy) to dream and cannot remember doing so more than about twenty times in my life! This dream was during the time my husband was away on war work and after seeing a George Murphy film — (I cannot remember which) . He was making violent love to me at some beautiful house near a river! I like Mr. Murphy's acting and think him a versitile (versatile) and clever man, but nothing more than that and I am sure photographs however real, could never give me feelings other than interest and pleasure of sight only. However, my husband is quite different and seems to have a real affection for several of the actresses we see. The Actors have no effect other than interest, for him and I have never noticed him copying them in any way of manner or dress; but how very different from our little girl! Although she is only ten, she copies all the best traints (traits) in dress, 'hair do's' (as she calls them) and, for a very short time, manners of the actresses! I am sure I could tell what star she had seen, even if I had not been to the film with her! 221
