THE ADULT AND THE CINEMA They were never able to have complete rest or even a peaceful one. They would never be allowed into Heaven, they would just drift aimlessly in space with their terrible thoughts. I then thought very seriously about it all. So you can see that one film did make a person change their mind. In answer to your second question, as to whether any films have appeared in my dreams. I was once dreaming of an air raid when suddenly Greer Garson seemed to appear. It was in the air raid scene in Mrs. Miniver. She vanished as quickly as she appeared. This happened quite a long time after I had seen the film. My age is eighteen. I am a male, and my occupation is an assistant in shop. My nationality is British. My father is deceased, but he was a Blacksmith, and my mother is a housewife. 40. Miss . . . You wish to know my reactions, if any, towards films as regards behaviour, love affairs, personal outlook etc. Yes, films do have an effect upon me, some more than others and certain films become fixed in my mind for quite a length of time. Most, of course, depends on how well the characters are portrayed by the various actors, and how true to life, my own perhaps, the film is. I tend to be a superstitious person and so the film Flesh and Fantasy had a distinct effect on me in the respect that it taught me a lesson. It consisted of three stories, the first I shall omit because it was not connected in any way with the lesson. The second concerned 'mind over matter', and showed how a certain thing, if allowed to prey on one's mind can end fatally as was this case. The third centred round belief in dreams and fear mingled with belief that those dreams might occur in real life. Each story showed eventually that the person concerned was a victim of overimaginative powers which were beginning to take the upper hand in my life, but it taught me a lesson and a very valuable one. Another film which had an effect on me was The Moon and Sixpence, a film based on the life of Gauguin the famous painter. My interests in art are very great apart from the fact that Gauguin is one of my favourite artists. His ambition, determination to get what he wanted and his very unsettled ways impressed me very much, insomuch that I determined to achieve my ambition and become an artist also. Not to be the same as him, an artist, but something more, for the love of p 225 M.S.F.
