THE ADULT AND THE CINEMA and Christmas Holiday. These are only three — where I tried to play the part 'Anna Neagle' played in Edith Cavell; Joan Fontaine played in Jane Eyre and Deanna Durbin's 'Abigail' in Christmas Holiday which was very dramatic — all three were for that matter — which shows that dramatic acting appeals to me most. I think, then, I have given you as many examples of my reactions etc. as I can. A good many films have been recorded in my dreams and I am one of those persons who has innumerable dreams in the course of a night. Films which have no effect on me consciously are those which I dream about. Such are Bride of Frankenstein; Journey into Fear and Ministry of Fear. Perhaps it is my adventurous spirit taking the upper-hand again. My subconscious mind carrying out those things which I should like to experience consciously. I am continually playing the part of the person who is in the midst of danger in the dream. For instance, Ray Milland's part in Ministry of Fear and Joseph Cotten's in Journey into Fear. The only difference is that in the dream I am a female. That of course is only natural, considering it is my sex. At certain parts in the dream I found it very difficult to make my legs move when I was being chased. I frequently dream that I am a ballerina and many scenes concerning ballet in films I dream about, seeing myself as the principal ballerina. Such films were — The Goldwyn Follies, where I danced the ballet which Vera Zorina danced. In Forian I undertook Trina BaronovaV ballet in the court scene, and more recently I saw the film Lady Let's Dance and shortly after I dreamed I was executing the same ballet 'Belita' had done in the film. Not to perfection, because dreams are never really as intricate as that, but enough to know, when I woke, that it was the ballet from that particular film I had been dancing. Aviation films have rather a queer effect on me in dreams. I cannot give any names of particular films because most of them have been war films. I have a very great fear of heights and after having seen a film shot in an aeroplane thousands of feet up, where one can just see the ground below, I have the most fantastic dreams. I am flying through air — without aeroplane or anything, mind you, seeing the same distant ground as I had in the film. I am not afraid in the dreams very much to the contrary — I seem to be enjoying myself immensely — soaring up and down in the weirdest manner. 227
