THE ADULT AND THE CINEMA 46. Miss . . . In answer to your first question, 'Have films ever influenced you with regard to personal decisions or behaviour?' I say what kind of films? Marriage is a Private Affair type of film showed a happy ending but it showed that to make life turn out that way a family must be understanding and a fellow must wait after his wedding and let his wife have a good time with her past flames while he minds the baby. No matter how considerate a husband no such thing should be allowed. That film answers No. As for Mrs. Miniver your answer is Yes. It encouraged many young girls to get married and cling to what happens to be the present and to look with courage to the future and take from life what it gives them. The kind of films where a girl or fellow plays hard to get makes some of its audience think they'll try it but often the one who should do the chasing isn't willing to chase. Then comes disaster. As for myself though I think films of the right kind, can influence people's lives a lot. For instance I'm a shop assistant and often I've longed to tell customers off but thought 'the girl in the film didn't get nasty she remained polite'. So lucky for some people the film did good. Women in uniform on the screen often make me feel I'd like to join the Ferry Pilots (Anna Neagle in They Flew Alone). Then came Gentle Sex which encouraged many girls into the A.T.S. But the wrong kind of films make our minds go haywire and though the films have happy endings, the examples we follow, don't. For instance, musicals! when the girl has both career and her man when in fiction it works out but not in life usually. So the answer is 'yes' usually. No. 2 Question. Have films ever appeared in your dreams? Yes. Often I see a picture and if it's good keep thinking about it but I remember seeing two films Lloyds of London and also Yankee Doodle Dandy. In the latter I started dreaming of the war concerned and the last thing I remember dreaming about was the end of, by the fashions, this war. Personally though I might have been thinking of the film and then began to wonder how this war would end, thus a dream. I also think that dreams often start and are actually based or led on by what you think about before you go to sleep. I am 16, female. Shop assistant (hoping to be an actress!) English and Daddy works in an office old grey mum is just housewife. 231
