THE ADULT AND THE CINEMA success and my mental foreknowledge has been proven correct by general concensus of public opinion at a later date. For instance Alan Ladd playing a walk on part in The Goldwyn Follies. I cannot recall the names of more than two dozen films at one time but I recently bought a film review in which were the releases for a year and I could tick off all those I had seen. I can even tell by looking at the cast list the type of film I am going to see. After studying films for so long I now use a certain discrimating filter of those I wish to see and those I dont. In answer to the questions I have never dreamt about anything let alone films. With regard to the second question, Yes as for instances my chief feeling is plain admiration with a feeling of inferiority, at the efficiency and attention to detail by the movie producers. I am not one of those gullible film fans who believe that a film actor or actress displays in real life the same characteristics as those they portray on the screen. In fact after so many years of going to films if I see the same player in a number of films I can distinguish between those inherent natural characteristics and those assumed for the role. I always enjoy homely films like the Hardy series, Claudia, and others. A recent example of wrong casting in my opinion was Deanna Durbin who is I consider the screens perfect player for the role of a nice girl being cast as a rather loose character in Somerset Maughams film Christmas Holiday. Recent articles in the Filmgoer referring to Miss Durbins marital disagreements have rather shaken my idealistic conception of this young ladies (lady's) nature especially at her age but as I quote above in this case it serves me right. Part of the question is whether the films have influenced me with regard to fashions. I must admit that study of the dress and manners of Ronald Colman. David Niven. Walter Pidgeon. Brian Aherne. Paul Henreid. Leslie Howard have improved my taste in such matters. It 242
