THE ADULT AND THE CINEMA 60. Miss . . .
My environment is not what I would have it, yet I do not alter it. (This preface is not beside the point, it is necessary if I am to reveal at all accurately why certain films have affected me). Partly because my mother is unwell and would be lonely without me, partly because my Father means well, and doesn't realise that he and not I is leading my life, partly because I am afraid to go against him at home.
I was considered clever at school, passed scholarships to Secondary and Technical schools, but my parents wouldn't let me go. As a result I never had a passable education. I am studying English and elocution and one day I may make an authoress. I have the brains but not the education.
George Sanders who portrayed the artist in The Moon and Sixpence seemed to me to be in my position. Tied to a home, that was not a home to him, and to a wife who didn't love him for what he was but for what she wanted him to be.
He had the courage (I seem to lack it) to cast aside convention and pursue his course whatever the cost to himself or others.
The cost was not great the love he had for his last wife and the joy he got from his achievements made his tragic death seem worth while.
This film made me realise more than ever, never to ignore inspiration, whether or not I receive acclaim.
Son of Fury was not a brilliant film, the scene that interested me was the one in which Ben (played by Tyrone Power) is teaching one of the island girls how to eat with a knife and fork; she drops the food and exclaims I am stupid, Ben reflected and said he was the stupid one for trying to alter their way of life.
With all that they lack in culture, this film brought home to me, that the uneducated people are the happiest, providing their associates are equally ignorant.
Kings Row was the most perfectly acted film I have ever seen. The charactors that interested me were that of Cassie the insane daughter of the doctor who instructs Paris, a young student in his studies.
Cassie loves Paris, and he is devoted too (to) her, the way she acts make him aware that she is unbalanced, but he won't let himself believe it is anything that matters.
Cassie's Father Dr. Towers kills Cassie and himself, rather than see Paris ruin his life.
Paris knows that it was best, yet Cassie is always in his thoughts,
