(^harles <Ray Charles Ray, as a lad, had aspirations for circus and stage life. He became acquainted with Sam De Grasse, from whom he received much encouragement. After a few years of "bits" in stock and road vaudeville, he had a chance in motion pictures — as an extra. Thomas H. Ince liked his work and placed him in the studio company, and before long Ray's characteriza tions made his roles win distinct popularity for him. He appeared in "The Courtship of Miles Standish." Born in Jacksonville, Illinois, in 1891. Educated at Illinois and Los Angeles. He is married.
