Description:
The official magazine of Kansas City's WHB radio station, SWING printed far more than the station's schedule (which, as the title SWING suggested, relied heavily on music). From 1945 to 1953, SWING offered readers something eclectic every month -- profiles of entertainers on one page, discussions of citizenship in the postwar world on the next, with write-ups of nightlife offerings in KC, Chicago, and New York mixed in. WHB spent decades lobbying the FCC for clear channel status; the magazine's ambitious scope may have been part of the station's attempt to legitimate itself. But it was SWING'S first editor, Jetta Carleton, who later wrote a celebrated novel, that gave the magazine its distinctive style. -- Eric Hoyt, 2015

Chief Engineer Henry (Goldie) Gold' enberg was thankful there were no power failures; but his technicians were ready with a standby power supply for any emergency. They covered remote originations with efficiency and dispatch; performed as a well-trained, disciplined team should perform! Merely to keep a 10,000-watt transmitter continuously on the air for 91'/2 hours is no small feat in itself. Hats off to "Goldie," Lew Baird, Ray Brophy, Bob Earsom, Fred Fuenfs' tueck, Ed Hall, Warren McFadden, Roy Nonemaker, BoBo Pike, Ed Shepherd and Paul Todd! The switchboard "went crazy" for five consecutive days and nights — and the calls continue as this issue of Swing goes to press. With the flood waters subsiding, and a stricken community returning daz' edly to work — or not returning to work, in those plants still under water — more than 550 bulletins were broadcast from employers. Instructions to their employees about when and where to report for work . . . whether to bring their own lunches and drinking water ... or whether to take an enforced "holiday." Locations of temporary offices were announced, and information about when and where to nick up pay checks. Such instructions were broadcast by WHB as a public service (Continued on Page 375)
