We are in a position now to follow out exactly what does happen both in the cameras in the studios and Talkie projectors in the cinemas. We have seen that there are two methods of recording the sound on the film: the "Variable Area" method, by which the position of the light falling on to the film is altered so that the record takes the form of a zigzag area of dense black and clear celluloid ; and the "Variable Density" method by which the strength of the light is varied, the record in this case taking the form of continuously varied grey to dark streaks. We have gone into the question of what means are employed to produce these results so that we need only concern ourselves with the general functioning of both cameras and projectors. When recording is being done the sound-record is sometimes photographed directly on the picture film, in the same camera, but usually this is only done in the case of "news reels" when it is not possible to carry round heavy studio apparatus.
