HREE of ‘a new series of Nick Carter pictures were i screened to: the London trade last week, and.proved to be worthy succéssors of the first series which have done so well in British kinemas. ~“ Unseen Foes,”’ the first to be shown, was unusually full of complications and sudden thrilling turns, the eventual unravelling of the mystery divulging an ingenious scheme for diverting suspicion. Nick Carter and Patsy, his ward and associate, are visiting a hotel, when the former hears a shot fired, and discovers the door of the room locked. Climbing to peer through a fanlight he sees a grey-headed man prostrate in a chair. After many attempts he secures entrance into the yoom through a communicating room, and finds the chair in which the dead mun had sat empty. Thereafter, events follow in hurrying sequence as Nick and his partner endeavour to elucidate the mystery. They are successful, and the explanation is quite fascinating. ‘““ The Game of Graft’ is a:story of quite a different type, in which the detective is engaged in discovering the true character of young Weston, son of a rich man, engaged to the daughter of a rich man. His association with a cabaret dancer forms the contre of the story, and the story ends in true melodramatic manner, with the imprisonment of Weston and Patsy in an old house, where a scuffle results in the overturning of a Jamp, and the desertion of the couple bound hand and foot by the villain and the-cabaret dancer. Of course, Nick and his partner are triumphant in the end, and young Weston dis -suaded from his contemplated forgery and disillusioned regarding his cabaret Delilah. ** The Last Call ’’ introduces the;radiophone in quite an up-todate magne Faby, the, Woratdor song, sung by a famous prima. donna, followed by screams for help. Patsy is “ faa in,’’ and, hearing the screams, immediately gets in touch with Nick. The singer is discovered to be missing, and the rest of the picture is occupied in tracing her whereabouts.. She is: eventually discovered bound and gagged by a jealous. husband, who, as a chemist, is seeking to destroy his wife's. voice, in order that he may regain her, and keep her at home. A little dog, which is introduced in this picture, has quite a. fascinating part. It was sought at the trade show to increase the effect of the listening in by use of a singer and a megaphone, but the result was not too happy, and tickled the risibility of those present rather than increasing its appeal. Patrons who have been attracted by Nick Carter in the past will certainly ‘‘ fall for’? this series, and the pictures shown,. and those that are to follow, should be sure of a good reception.. They possess just the right amount of suspense, and the situa-. tions introduced for the purpose of nonplussing the audience. are, especially in the first-named picture, triumpharftly successful.
