The master criminals of fact and Action are a notable company. Such names as Charles Peace, Moriarty, Landru, to meuition | ouly a few, are household words. All these notorious ones, however, will have to look to their laurels when Germany’s latest | super-flm, ‘‘ Dr. Mabuse,’’ ig shown publicly. Dr. Mabuse, psycho-analyst, forger, swindler, murderer, and every other kind of criminal, is a character presented with much startling realism. It was Mary Pickford’s ambition to play the part of ‘‘ Paddy,’* and American producers offered the unprecedented sum of £20;000 for the film rights, but they were beaten in the market by a young British company, Graham Wilcox Productions, Ltd., who designed an assault on the supremacy of the Californian studios with a series of British super-films to include ‘‘ Flames of Passion,’’ “* Paddy-the-Next-Best-Thing,”’ *‘ The Wonderful Story,”? “Chu ‘Chih “Chow,”’ ‘and ‘* Loyalties." ** Paddy ” was shown to the public for the first time at the New Scala Theatre on Friday evening, January 26, at 8-30. ‘‘ The Prodigal Son’ Trade Show. “Stoll’s are, we understand, ‘screening ‘‘ The Prodigal ‘Son, ‘which will be put out as two pictures at one sitting at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, on Sunday, February 4, at 6-p.m, prompt.
