It should be noted that in this list of territories with the highest average size drive-in, four of them, New Haven, New York, Buffalo, and Milwaukee are among the territories with the least number of outdoor theatres. Analysis by State Except for a few rather minor changes the standings of the states with the most drive-ins remains similar to last year. The biggest change saw Indiana with 113 drive-ins, representing only an increase of two, drop from the first 10 and be replaced by South Carolina, which has 124 outdoor theatres in 1953 as compared with 96 in 1952, In another change New York dropped from seventh with 112, in 1952, to tenth this year with 119 driveins. All states showed an increase over last year. The states with the most drive-ins are as follows: States Theatres MG KRS Tee tia sta eeic en wlevcreys are North Carolina Pennsylvania .. New Jersey .............25 Lh SOE) <a 25 Every state in this group showed an increase over last year, The 11 states listed have a total of 173 drive-ins as compared with 132 in 1952, thus representing a total gain of 31 theatres. Conclusion There can be little disputing with the fact that an increase of 675 new driveins is a substantial gain. However, for _ a number of reasons, it does not repre sent the maximum number of theatres that will be built before the end of 1953. It was unfortunate that the Government ban was lifted so late. It is rather amazing the total number of new drive-ins that were built in the short span of time between the partial lifing of the ban and the publication of this list. It appears to be rather safe and conservative to assume that many more new outdoor theatres will have been built before the final days of 1953 arrive. On the following pages are the detailed listing of individual theatres from which the above statistics were drawn. While the Editors have every reason to believe that the survey is as complete and accurate as is humanly possible to produce, it is possible that a few minor errors and omissions are present. For this reason, plus the fact that the listing is subject to changes by virtue of new ownership, enlarged or reduced capacities, closings, and the addition of new theatres, its use as a mailing list without first consulting the publishers for changes and additions, is not recommended. Moreover, permission to use the survey for a mailing list must first be obtained from the publishers. SSS EE EE Eee A LISTING BY DISTRIBUTION TERRITORIES NOTE: This 1953 list took several months to prepare, and has resulted from the cross-checking of numerous film distributor and supply dealer lists of their customers, with the resulting compilation being sent out into each of the 31 film distribution territories for field testing to eliminate duplications and inconsistencies. It is believed to be the only true list of such theatres in existence, accurate and complete as of July 15, 1953. The rural nature and highway locations of such theatres make accurate addressing most difficult. Owners themselyes make understandable mistakes regarding the location of township and boro lines, and of the postal routes which dictate their mailing address. Wherever possible, postal routes and post boxes have been listed; and where a particular hamlet has no postal office, communications should be directed to the owner at his address. Numerals in parentheses behind each listing are the reported car capa cities of each, Where particular theatres are operated by circuits or owners in other than the particular location, or when film is booked by an agent or cooperative buying combine, some effort is directed toward listing the Jatter’s business location or home address. —————————— Eee ALBANY TERRITORY New York (NOTE: See also Buffalo and und New York Territories) parte Bay, N.
