Nobody would believe this film, with its loosely connected episodic units, was adapted from a stage play were it not for its theatrical framing scenes. At the beginning and end the two protagonists converse about the questionable state of the world, which in their opinion remains invariably the same, wars and revolutions notwithstanding. [Illus. 53] In other words, they tell us what should be considered the moral of the film, thus imposing a meaning on it which threatens to obscure the inherent multiple meanings of the pictures themselves. Hence the nuisance character of the framing scenes: they reduce the film to an illustration; they force it to illustrate the very message you would expect it to convey on its own account. These scenes transform the film from a cinematic communication into a whole with an ideological center.
