absorption of the lens, however, probably cannot be ignored and certainly cannot be neglected if the balsam used in cementing the elements has not been carefully bleached since the slightest yellow color robs the light of a great deal of its actinic power. It is suspected that in cases not only has one neglected the effects of absorption and reflection but lenses have been marketed which were erroneously marked as regards F-number. 3. In view of this, it is believed to be well worth while that a study be made of some of the principal lenses in order to determine their actual efficiency in transmitting the light to the film. 4. We thank you for calling our attention to this matter and wish to feel free to call upon you for suggestions as the work progresses." It is possible that the foregoing matter might properly be referred at this time to our Standards Committee, for further action, or to the Optics Committee, for co-operation with the Bureau of Standards.
