Dear Boss, So you finally took me out of the cub reporters’ ranks. I was really pleased when you gave me this assignment on the Thanksgiving menus planned by Chicago’s TV menagerie. I dispatched myself post-haste with pencil and note paper to the TV studios. Here’s what happened: My .first stop was the circus room at WNBQ where my friend, Elmer the Ele¬ phant, hangs out. He repeated his menu to me—with just a little help from trainer John Conrad. Elmer is one of the finest cooks I know—never forgets a recipe. He’s cooking Thanksgiving dinner for John and himself from Pack E. Derm School of Fancy Cookery recipes. First thing Garfield Goose said to me when I greeted him behind his castle walls at WBBM-TV was, “Well, you can be sure it won’t be roast goose!” He told me his motto this Thanksgiving was “Protect the goose that’s on the loose.” Friend Frazer Thomas added that Thanksgiving will definitely be meat¬ less Thursday in the castle. Bobo, the woolly dog, arfed a warm welcome when I fovmd him and his bulb - nosed master, Nicky, around WBKB. Nicky had promised his faith¬ ful pal anything he wanted for Thanks¬ giving. I think Nicky will have some difficulty keeping his promise. My next stop was at the lair of the Happy Pirates over at WBKB. Found Bubbles the Porpoise swabbing the deck while Squawky the Parrot needled her unmercifully. Bubbles stopped to smack Elmer the Elephant Pate de fois Peanuts Creme de Peanut Soup (with Peanut croutons) Roast stuffed Peanut under glass (au natural) Peanut Souffle Peanut Muffins (a la Elmer) Old Fashioned Southern Peanut Pie Salted Pecans Lemonade Bubbles the Porpoise Anchovy Hors D’oeuvres Clam Chowder Small school of salmon imported from Alaskan Waters with Oyster Dressing Seaweed with Hollandaise sauce Green River cocktail Salt water taffy Squawky the Parrot Stuffed papaya with Brazil Nut dressing Side dish of Bird Seed Mashed Bananas Cheese and Crackers Cocoa Cocktail irfield Goose anberry Cocktail with Chocolate Syrup Roast Cranberries with Cranberry dress¬ ing and Scalloped Cranberries Cranberry cake with Cranberry sauce topped with gooseberries A-2
