I just looked at the camera and said, ‘Well, that’s the way the film looks upside down and backward.’ What else could I say?” The most memorable of the com¬ paratively rare snafus was what the CBS men call The Ol’ Debbil Green Incident. “I was running over the list of Republican Convention keynoters,” says Doug, “and came to the name of Dwight Green, then Governor of Illinois. As I announced that Green’s picture would be on the screen in a few seconds, a sinister looking devil was flashed on. The devil was meant for the commercial. Our sponsor was plugging an Album of Faust.” Show Vast In Scope The Edwards news crew is small in comparison to the vast scope of the show. Backbone of .the operation is the crew of 250 cameramen who are on call all over the world. A Kan¬ sas flood, an outbreak in Iran, a World Series or an attempted suicide are all potential camera bait for the network’s lensmen. Editing of the film is in the hands of Edwards, co¬ producer Don Hewitt and the cut- ’em-and-splice-’em team of Bill Kling and Tommy Phillips. Altogether, some 85 man hours go into the quar¬ ter hour news digest each night. A conscientious reporter, Edwards has one pretty solidly ingrained prej¬ udice: sensationalism. His TV news¬ paper avoids playing up tidbits of scandal, divorce or ledge jumpers. Although the “Dean of TV News¬ men” (a title few could dispute) has no pretensions of “educating” view¬ ers, he remains one of the main cogs in the big television news machine that is doing a heck of a job con¬ vincing most TV cynics that the me¬ dium is not all gags and giveaways.
