Program-wise, one of its newest mem¬ bers, the National College of Education (in Evanston) has put its faculty to work developing educational shows aimed for parents of pre-nursery chil- Brent dren. These pro- grams may be- among the first to be televised by the educational TV station when it launches operations: next October. Looks like the moms around Chicago are giving their bobby-sox daughters some fan club competition. Latest report ‘is that a group of North Shore female admirers have formed a fan club for WBKB’s master philosopher, Stuart Brent. A 17-year-old Des Plaines girl snatched first prize in the Strike It Rich letter-writing contest on the subject, ‘ “Why I Would Like To Go To Wash¬ ington, D. C., for Christmas.” As a result, Martha Manly, Leyden Township high school senior, is spending Christmas in the nation’s capital with her father, mother, sister and teacher while Strike It Rich foots the bills. Dr. Frances Horwich, who tasted suc¬ cess with her Ding Dong School books this year, is readying another literary effort directed at the parents. Titled, Have Fun With Your Children, it’s skedded for publication next summer. Cute Carole Mathews, of the Meet Mr. McNutley cast, may sound familiar to Windy City viewers. Reason is she was one of the first girl disc jockeys on record. Carole began her career back in 1944 on a WGN radio show. Channel Chatter: The Happy Pirates are swabbing the deck in honor of their first birthday on WBKB this Dec. 29. Chan¬ nel 7’s birthday gift was an expansion of time, from 25 to 55 minutes. Plaudits to Two Ton Baker and his crew. Add 1954 tax deductions: Mai Bell- airs’ wife, Jo, just presented the TV huckster with his fifth tax exemption, a 10-pound baby boy named Richard John. And come January, Art Hellyer is looking forward to pacing the floor nights with his expected young ’un. Week’s Program Highlights: Lee Phil¬ lip’s Christmas Day show on WBBM-TV has been expanded to a half-hour. Hal Block will feature his original composition, The Lonely Little Mistle¬ toe, on his Christmas Day Four to Go quiz (11 AM, Channel 9). Dr. Preston Bradley, pastor of Chi¬ cago’s People’s Church, subs for Earl Nightingale on his WGN-TV morning chat, beginning Christmas Day. Note: For informa¬ tion on other Christ- mas shows, see page A-7. Advance Tips on Shows: WBKB, still shifting its schedule, trots out another new lineup for ’54. The Annie Oakley film series debuts Sunday, Jan. 3, at 2 PM in an alternate week arrangement. On Jan. 4, the City Assignment film series bows in the 10 PM slot. You’ve probably seen these epi¬ sodes under the titles, Big Town and Heart of the City. WGN-TV mirrors the New Year reso¬ lutions of the Cliff Johnson family on a special TV showing Jan. 2 at 9:30 AM.
